The songs from the 1990s and 2000s that were streamed the most on Spotify Nigeria in 2022 have been listed by Spotify.

In the top three are the classic hits "Gongo Aso" by Afrobeats master 9ice, "Olufunmi" by super group Styl Plus, and "Fall In Love" by Afrobeats pioneer D'banj.

In October, Spotify published two playlists featuring the top deep cuts and timeless classics from the 2000s and 2010s Afrobeats, capitalizing on this enthusiasm. They contain music that continues to be adored by followers and inspired many modern Afrobeats masters.

Victor Okpala, Spotify's West Africa Artist and Label Partnerships Manager, comments on the list:

"It is simple to understand how these historical influences, which their parents consumed, could influence the identities and artwork of modern innovators. Consider Sare, a 2020 album by Ayra Starr that incorporates the Lijadu Sisters' 1979 song Orere Elejigbo."

"Additionally, as evidenced by Spotify's Wrapped data for 2022, Nigerians are also avid listeners of classic music. Young listeners prefer songs from the 1990s and 2000s, with a preference for R&B and hip-hop songs from those eras, he continues."

According to this year's data, the top 2000s songs feature several of the decade's major international artists, including Beyonce, Jay Z, and Eminem. Though many of the top tracks are attributable to Afrobeats legends like Wande Coal, Styl Plus, and D'banj, Nigerians continue to exhibit an unique need for love ballads and R&B sounds from that decade.
