Cardinals Cut 10 To Reduce Spring Roster To 46

Cardinals reduce spring roster to 46

10 players sent to minors camp

JUPITER, Fla., March 14, 2024 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that the team has reduced its Spring Training roster to 46 players, sending 10 players to their Minor League Camp.

The team optioned right-handed pitcher Sem Robberse to the Memphis (AAA) roster, and re-assigned the following non-roster players to minor league camp:

RHP Gordon Graceffo, RHP Ryan Loutos, RHP Michael McGreevy, RHP Tekoah Roby, LHP Connor Thomas, catchers Aaron Antonini and Jimmy Crooks, and infielders Arquimedes Gamboa and Jeremy Rivas.

The team currently has 38 Major League roster players and eight non-roster invitees remaining in its Major League camp.

Pretty much more non-surprises here; Loutos, Roby, and Thomas all need more minors time. Robberse and McGreevy don’t have rotation spots in the Majors, so more time at Memphis is in the cards for them.

Graceffo is the surprising one; there was talk of a bullpen spot for him early in camp. I guess a 5.40 ERA and 1.35 WHIP moved him out of contention, although he could have been working on pitches and grips in game. I do expect to see him at some point this season.

Antonini and Crooks were expendable with more pitchers being sent down. Gamboa and Rivas didn’t have a shot at making the team with the pretty much the infield and bench being set; it would have taken an unbelievable performance for them to even be considered.

The 8 remaining non-roster players are pitchers Kyle Leahy and Wilking Rodriguez, catchers Nick Raposo and Wade Stauss, infielders Cesar Prieto and Thomas Saggese, and outfielders Matt Koperniak and Victor Scott II. Of those, Rodriguez, Saggese, and Scott II have an outside shot of breaking the camp with the Cardinals.
