INSIDE UDUS: Students Sanitize Bakassi Hostel

By Abdulrasheed Akere

The male students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) who are residing in Bakassi Hostel sanitized the whole vicinity on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

The environmental exercise was tagged as “Bakassi Boys Sanitation” and was initiated by four hall governors of the hostel. They placed the motive of sanitation on “A cleaner environment is our collective responsibility, let's act now.” The cleaning exercise includes general sweeping of the surroundings, unblocking of waterways, and cleaning of water tanks.

While speaking with PEN PRESS UDUS, Abdulrahman Adeniji Abdulraheem, a hall governor at Bakassi Hostel said, “What brought about the general cleaning is because of how students used to dispose of wastes indiscriminately. I realized that they need to be sensitized to curb the wrong act.”

He added, “The turnout of students for the cleaning is quite impressive. We have informed every student beforehand and also sensitized them on the purpose of having a clean environment.”

A resident of the hostel, Tiamiyu Abdulmuiz Ayinde, a 300-level student of Adult Education expressed pleasure over the sanitation. “We observed that students are having different sicknesses in the hostel, unknown to us that the problem is from the water we drink. A lot of dirty items (living and nonliving) were removed from the water tanks.”

“Some of our water tanks have stopped working for a while, it was during the sanitation that we discovered what blocked them and removed the particles. All our tanks are now functioning perfectly,” he noted.

Abdulmuiz wished this kind of exercise take place frequently, at least twice a semester so that their environment would be hygienic.
