3 Ways You’re Using ChatGPT Wrong & How To Harness Its Full Potential

The AI landscape is changing rapidly. To best leverage this technology for our businesses, we need to keep our finger on the pulse.

The use cases for AI in business, specifically that of ChatGPT, are far reaching – including everything from marketing to research, coding to content creation.

However, if we don’t truly understand the purpose of ChatGPT, it can cause frustrations, inaccuracies, and misunderstandings.

In this two-part blog series, we’ll uncover what ChatGPT is, why it was created, and how we can use it to our advantage.

This blog series is based on a webinar hosted by Tiffany Bridges, who has spent months delving into the world of AI and creating free guides for businesses wanting to learn more.

Tiffany is the Founder of AI Edge coaching, through which she helps businesses to leverage the transformative power of AI.

The four main use cases of ChatGPT in business

There are a multitude of fantastic and easily accessible use cases for ChatGPT, and four main ones we have noticed since implementing it into our workforce.

  1. Increased capacity
Using ChatGPT to draft emails, blog posts, social media captions, business strategy, translations and so much more can equate to hours saved per week.

2. Boost communication efficiency

Not only can ChatGPT produce text in almost 100 languages, it can also boost the efficiency of communication when fed the correct prompts, helping to keep discussions short and to the point.

3. Automate repetitive tasks

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of automation around here, which is why we were instantly on board with AI’s ability to automate those mundane, recurring tasks that eat into so much of our time.

4. Leverage its contextual understanding

ChatGPT has a fantastic ability to summarise long pieces of information or text – but for accurate results, we must make sure we’re priming and prompting correctly.

P.S. stay tuned for part two of this blog series all about effective priming and prompting!

Is ChatGPT as complicated as it seems?

Many people shy away from ChatGPT because they perceive it to be more complicated than it is. Of course, there are multiple ways we can use this technology, some more advanced than others, but the basic dynamics are relatively simple.

There are three main reasons people don’t get the most out of ChatGPT:

  1. Having unrealistic expectations

ChatGPT cannot create a flawless marketing strategy from start to finish that will bring about the exact results we want, nor can it write a whole book from scratch. These expectations are a little unrealistic! There are ways we can use ChatGPT to generate a fantastic marketing strategy or help with writing, but it requires some thought and patience.

2. Ignoring the learning curve

People are often overwhelmed by the concept of ChatGPT. In reality, however, it’s just like learning a new language – at first, it might seem impossible, but with time and practise you can become fluent. ChatGPT is indeed like its own language, and when we understand how to properly communicate with it, we get the best results.

3. Misunderstanding its role

It’s important to point out that there are lots of different AI tools and that ChatGPT is one of them. Understanding ChatGPT’s role is essential in getting the most out of it. If you’ve ever had a team member in the wrong role, you’ll understand how frustrating it is. But when we move them to the right role, that’s when the magic happens.

What are the limitations of ChatGPT?

Despite being one of the most revolutionary advancements in technology during recent times, ChatGPT does indeed have its limitations.

As a brief overview, the five main limitations of ChatGPT are as follows:

  1. It lacks personal memory.

This means that when you start a new chat, it is starting completely afresh. It has no memory of previous exchanges. This is where priming can help, which we’ll be covering in part two of this blog mini series.

2. It doesn’t handle long conversations well

After a certain number of prompts (the parameters of which are constantly changing and evolving) it will be unable to retain information exchanged previously.

3. It is impacted by “temperature settings”

The “temperature” is a parameter that affects the predictability versus randomness of a response. Many times people will become frustrated at receiving random responses from ChatGPT, but this could be as simple as having temperature settings too high.

If you’d like to learn more about this, check out this handy guide created by Tiffany.

4. It is sensitive to input

If we input bad prompts, we will get bad responses – it’s really as simple as that!

Luckily, we’ll be sharing more about how to create great prompts in part two of this blog mini series.

5. It is subject to hallucinations

This is a hard problem to tackle, but it is being actively worked on by experts. Whilst ChatGPT is not connected to the live Internet, it has been trained on text from the Internet, which, as we know can lead to other issues such as bias or misinformation.

This means that sometimes, just like humans, AI can make things up or get things wrong. This is why it’s so important to review and verify what we’re putting out into the world from AI, just the same as we would with things from our team.

What’s next for AI?

When it comes to what’s next for AI, it’s best summed up, as Tiffany says, with this quote: “

Anything and everything is possible.”
