Hugh Jackman has admitted that he was fully finished with playing Wolverine after 2017's Logan, even after being repeatedly asked to return by Ryan Reynolds. However, in an interview with The Guardian, Jackman revealed that there was one reason why he decided to come back for Deadpool 3. "I wasn't tortured by it. When people would ask me [to reprise the role] - including Ryan, every five seconds - I was like: I'm done," he said. Despite not being particularly eager to return to the role, Jackman ultimately felt that it was the right decision, saying "I just wanted to do it and I felt it in my gut."
He also joked that a key reason for his return was the opportunity to "punch the sh*t out of Ryan Reynolds every day."
Deadpool 3 will be the first Deadpool Film to be produced under the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) banner, but it will retain its R-rating. Ryan Reynolds had pitched a Deadpool-Wolverine team-up to Marvel's Kevin Feige soon after the acquisition of Fox, but it was not possible at the time. However, the team-up is now happening. Both Reynolds and Jackman have emphasized that the film will not alter the timeline of Logan and that Wolverine is still deceased at the time of that film, which takes place in the distant future.
Jackman did confirm, however, that the film will utilize the concept of timeline manipulation that is present in the Marvel universe. This allows the film to take place without affecting the events of Logan, which was important to Jackman.
In an interview promoting his upcoming drama The Son, Hugh Jackman was asked about the allegations against X-Men director Bryan Singer and how they might have impacted the legacy of those films. Jackman responded, "You know, that's a really, really complicated question. There's a lot of things at stake there.
X-Men was the turning point, I believe, in terms of comic-book movies and I think there's a lot to be proud of. And there's certainly questions to be asked and I think should be asked. But I guess I don't know how to elegantly answer that." Deadpool 3 is set to be released on November 8, 2024.
