The History of Washington's Birthday

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the first son of Augustine and Mary Washington. George's father died when he was eleven years old. George's mother then married a man named Lawrence Lewis. Lawrence was a wealthy landowner and had connections to the Virginia House of Burgesses. At the age of sixteen, George inherited his father's estate. He then studied at the College of William and Mary. In 1753, he was appointed as a major in the Virginia militia.

In 1754, the French and Indian War broke out. Washington was sent to the Ohio River Valley to warn the French to stay out of British territory. Instead of listening, the French attacked Washington and his men. This led to the start of the Seven Years' War. Washington surrendered at Fort Necessity in 1754.

After the war, Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis. Martha was a widow with two children. They had no children together, but they raised her children as their own. The Washingtons moved to Mount Vernon, which was one of their plantations.

In 1774, the first Continental Congress was held in Philadelphia. Washington was chosen to be a delegate from Virginia. The following year, the Second Continental Congress was held. This is when Washington was chosen to be the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Revolutionary War began shortly after. In 1777, the British defeated the Americans at the Battle of Brandywine. They then captured Philadelphia. The Americans were able to win two battles at Saratoga, which led to France joining the war as an ally.

In 1781, the British were defeated at the Battle of Yorktown. This effectively ended the war. The Americans had won their independence. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed. This officially ended the Revolutionary War.

In 1787, the Constitution was written. Washington was elected as the first president of the United States in 1789. He was re-elected in 1792. Washington decided not to run for a third term. He retired to Mount Vernon in 1797.

Washington died at his home on December 14, 1799. He was 67 years old. He was buried at Mount Vernon.

A holiday was created in his honor and is celebrated on February 22, which is his birthday. The holiday is called Washington's Birthday. It is also commonly known as Presidents' Day. This is because it is also the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, who was the 16th president of the United States.
