​George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the first son of Augustine and Mary Washington. George's father died when he was eleven years old. In 1774, the first Continental Congress was held in Philadelphia. Washington was chosen to be a delegate from Virginia. The following year, the Second Continental Congress was held. This is when Washington was chosen to be the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Revolutionary War began shortly after. In 1777, the British defeated the Americans at the Battle of Brandywine.
