TESTED! Spotify Super Grouper. Exciting but algorithm exhibiting pre Spotify-era legacy music industry symptoms!

Spotify SUPER GROUPER. What we got!

After coming across a new feature from Spotify, we were curious to know how it fared. SUPER GROUPER, as Spotify terms it, was the music target to test!

Since Spotify deserves a lot of credit for bringing music streaming to the fore, we were sure this must have been a well-thought out feature from the music streaming giant.

At first, it takes to the SUPER Grouper website with the catchline - Your Dream Band.

Thereafter, we are required to select the SIZE of the Super Grouper from among the three options available - 3,4 and 5.

I decided to go for 3. The next page prompts us to select the three Artists in succession. Finally, select a Group Name and lo....we are ready to go!

I tested Drake, Gloria Estefan and Krish The Muzzikman as my Super Group and named it as Good Morning Heartache Currents.

As the Super Grouper got created, the playlist was the main attraction. While songs belonging to both Drake and Gloria Estefan were fun and interesting, there were NO songs belonging to the 3rd artist - Krish The Muzzikman. At least one song was expected; however, that wasn't to be the case.

This brings us to the fundamentals. Since Spotify is dependent on its algorithms, it appears that the Super Grouper algorithm has a preference for the known artists as opposed to the independent artists or the lesser known artists. While I can perfectly understand the technical or the mathematical/statistical bias towards the celebrity artists, the inability to feature even one song of Krish The Muzzikman has the potential to defeat the purpose of the Super Grouper idea!

Since the Super Grouper playlist is just for fun and sharing without being curator-influenced, the Spotify algorithm needs to perform better to exhibit non-celebrity artist songs as well. Without this tweak, the Spotify algorithm will continue to remind us yet again of the pre Spotify-era times, where the lesser known artists were a non-entity.

The Spotify idea and platform boasts of thousands of indie artists and their songs. The Super Grouper algorithm would do well to feature songs of all the Group or Band Members and not avoid exhibiting songs of lesser known artists. That will be real music to the ears.
