Now that we have laid out the characteristics that we will use to provide information about each restaurant, we will discuss some of our favorite restaurants in the Providence area. Note that we will list these restaurants roughly in order of preference, with our favorite spots appearing closer to the top of the list.

Los Andes

Los Andes is a lovely Latin American restaurant that is without a doubt one of our favorite spots in Providence. In fact, it is probably one of our favorite spots in all of Rhode Island. Los Andes is a nice restaurant that has a lavishly decorated space that is complete with splashes of greenery, artificial waterfalls, and large stone sculptures. When you step through the doors, you seriously feel like you have been whisked away to another world. In addition to the ambiance being great, the food is amazing and a large portion of the menu can be made gluten free (they even have a dedicated gluten free fryer). Los Andes has a huge space with lots of seating, so this is a great spot to go if you want to meet up with a large group of friends to celebrate a special occasion.

  • Gluten free status. Los Andes is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, a large portion of the menu can be made gluten free upon request. The menu is not labeled, but the kitchen staff are very knowledgeable about what can be made gluten free and what cannot. If you have any questions about what can be made gluten free, the servers can speak with the kitchen staff to determine whether certain items can be made gluten free. Their staff are knowledgeable about cross contamination and take precautions to prevent cross contamination if you let them know that you have an allergy.
  • Other dietary restrictions. Los Andes is known for being able to accommodate gluten allergies and sensitivities in particular. That being said, their kitchen staff are very knowledgeable about cross contamination so they may be able to accommodate other food allergies. We will note that almost all of the entrees contain meat, so there may not be many options for vegetarians who are looking for a large entree. That being said, there are many appetizers, salads, and sides that are vegetarian friendly.
  • Cuisine. Los Andes is a Latin American restaurant that serves both Peruvian food and Bolivian food. There are more items on their menu that take inspiration from Peruvian cuisine than Bolivian cuisine, but there are some dishes that feature Bolivian flavors. Los Andes is known for serving huge portions of food, so this is a great place to go if you want to have leftovers for the next day.
  • Atmosphere. Los Andes is an amazing spot with a fabulous atmosphere. They have some of the best and most immersive decor in all of Providence. The restaurant is lavishly adorned with splashes of greenery, waterfalls, and stone sculptures. The outdoor patio area in particular feels like a magical oasis. This is a nice spot so people tend to dress up a little before heading over. That being said, it is not overly fancy.
  • Location. Los Andes is located a mile or two outside of the main downtown area in Providence. While it is not too far outside of the main downtown area, it is in a less dense area that feels a little more suburban. Due to the location, it is common for people to drive here rather than walking or taking public transportation.
  • Seating. Los Andes has a mixture of indoor and outdoor seating. This is a very large spot, but it is also a popular spot that often services large parties and events. We recommend making a reservation a few days in advance if you plan to attend during peak weekend dinner hours. During less busy times, it is often possible to get in without a reservation.

Massimo

Massimo is an Italian restaurant that is located right in the heart of Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood. This place serves some of the best gluten free Italian food that we have had in all of New England, and this is coming from someone who frequents Boston’s North End. They have a huge assortment of gluten free options that includes multiple types of gluten free pastas and some specialty items that are hard to find like gluten free cannolis. This is another nice spot with a relatively large space, so it is another great option if you want to meet up with friends to celebrate an occasion.

  • Gluten free status. Massimo is not a dedicated gluten free facility. That being said, almost all of their menu can be made gluten free with modifications. They have multiple different types of gluten free pasta and some specialty items that are not easy to find like gluten free cannolis. They have a separate gluten free menu that is absolutely massive and their servers are very knowledgeable about cross contamination.
  • Other dietary restrictions. Massimo also has vegetarian options available. Their menu is somewhat heavy on the meat, but there are a few dishes that are made without meat and a few additional dishes that can be made with vegan meat substitutes.
  • Cuisine. Massimo is an Italian restaurant that serves standard Italian American cuisine.
  • Atmosphere. Massimo is an upscale Italian restaurant with a nice ambiance. This is a popular spot to go to celebrate special occasions like engagement parties and rehearsal dinners, so there are often many people in the restaurant that are dressed to the nines. This is a bustling spot with lots of excitement in the air.
  • Location. Massimo is located right in the heart of Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood. It is on a bustling street that is lined with many popular restaurants and bakeries. It is an easy walk from the main downtown area in Providence.
  • Seating. Massimo has a mixture of indoor and outdoor seating available. This is a large spot, but it is also a very popular spot. We generally recommend making reservations a few days in advance if you plan to attend during a popular time, such as peak weekend dinner hours. If you plan to attend during a less popular time, then you may be able to walk in.

The Malted Barley

The Malted Barley is a casual spot that serves craft beer and some lighter food options. In particular, they are known for their soft pretzels and pretzel sandwiches that are made on homemade pretzel buns. While the name may seem ominous to those who maintain a gluten free diet, The Malted Barley actually has a large assortment of gluten free options. Almost all of their pretzels and pretzel sandwiches can be made gluten free upon request. They are knowledgeable about cross contamination and take precautions to prevent cross contamination where applicable.

  • Gluten free status. The Malted Barley is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant and they also make regular soft pretzels that contain gluten. That being said, they are knowledgeable about cross contamination and take precautions to keep gluten free food items separate from other items. Their menu is labeled with information about what can be made gluten free. Most items on the menu can be made gluten free upon request.
  • Other dietary restrictions. The Malted Barley also has vegan and vegetarian options available. This is a more casual spot that serves lighter food, so a large portion of the menu is vegetarian by default.
  • Cuisine. The Malted Barley serves American cuisine. In particular, they are known for their soft pretzels. They serve a range of soft pretzels that are made with different toppings and sauces. In addition to that, they also serve pretzel sandwiches that are made on soft pretzels or soft pretzel buns.
  • Atmosphere. The Malted Barley is just as much a bar as it is a restaurant and many people come here to enjoy their large selection of craft beers. That means that it is more casual than some of the other spots we have mentioned. The atmosphere is generally pretty laid back during the daytime, but it can get more rowdy late at night.
  • Location. The Malted Barley is located right in the heart of downtown Providence. It is in a dense area that has a huge number of shops, restaurants, and bakeries nearby.
  • Seating. The Malted Barley has a mixture of indoor seating. There are many more tables located indoors than there are outdoor tables, so make sure to stop by early if you want to snag an outdoor table. This is not a place where you need to make reservations, but it is a spot that fills up late at night so we recommend heading over a little on the early side.
