7 Things to do in Jasper – Winter Fun

Jasper is absolutely gorgeous year round, but Winter is truly a magical time to visit. If you are looking to get away from the crowds and explore the outdoors in the snow, then Jasper is the place for you! We went in mid-February and had almost perfect weather during our visit. Winter in Jasper is cold but if you layer up there in nothing you can’t do.

Outdoor Ice Skating

Head to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and go to the outdoor skating rink on Lake Mildred. This was the winter activity that I was most looking forward to. They have to areas for hockey and also figure skate – plus they have a cleared path to skate around the whole lake. They clean the snow off of it every day which makes it a great place to skate and enjoy the stunning view.

If you don’t have your own skates, you can go to the golf cabin and pick up a pair of rental skates. Make sure you check out my vlog to see the skating! One day I want to visit Banff in the winter to go skating at Lake Louise.

Jasper Food Tour

If you are a foodie like me, I highly suggest going on one of the Jasper Food Tours. I went on the Downtown Foodie Tour where they take you to 4 restaurants in downtown Jasper.  At each place you get one menu item and it is paired with a beverage. It was a great way to spend the afternoon.

The lovely lady who started this tour hitch-hiked from Quebec City to Jasper when she was younger and never left. She has amazing stories and will show you some of the best joints in Jasper. Since I have food allergies, she made sure there were gluten and dairy free options at each stop for me. My fave was the rice flour churros from the Olive Bistro. It was paired with a coffee liquor…and oh my gosh sooo good.

Check out my Alberta trip vlog! It includes everything on our road trip from Edmonton to Jasper.

A special thanks to Josh for joining me on this trip and taking my photos.

Sleigh Ride at Pyramid Lake

A real popular wintertime activity in Jasper is to go on a sleigh ride at Pyramid Lake. We went out with the Jasper Riding Stables. The bells and the winter wonderland make it all sorts of fun. Dress warm because it can get cold on the ride.

Fun fact – horses like mints!! I was feeding Dan and Stan and they just loved the mints. The sleigh ride is a great family activity and it brings out the kid out in all of us.

Dog Sledding

If you know me, you know I am a huge dog fan. Some may say that I could possible be obsessed. Dog sledding (or mushing) is a great Canadian winter experience. We went out with Cold Fire Creek Dog Sledding. They can pick you up at your hotel but on the day we went, they were at Pyramid Lake which was really convenient.

This family owns 100 dogs! So crazy right!?! They brought 3 teams out and the dogs they were all so cute, cuddly and full of beans. It was important to me to do this with dogs that are well cared for. These dogs are living the good life and they love what they do. Very happy sleddoggos!

Maligne Canyon Ice Walk

If you are up for an adventure, the Maligne Canyon Ice Walk is for you. Get on those layers and get in those boots because it is cold…even on a sunny day. In the canyon you will find amazing ice formations and frozen water falls!

For the canyon walk you can go with a tour guide (which is what we did) or you can go on your own. The whole park is enter at your own risk. If you do choose do go on your own, I suggest you have spikes for your boots. It can be slippery in some spots but other wise its an amazing experience. The canyon never looks the same each year because mother nature changes up the ice formations every winter. This is a must do activity if you visit Jasper.

Sunrise at Pyramid Island

Pyramid Island is a great sunrise spot. You can walk along the bridge and enjoy the sun hitting the mountain. It is a perfect way to start a winter day. During the beginning of winter you can skate on the lake but near the end of winter they stop cleaning the ice.

Sunset at Medicine Lake

Medicine Lake is surrounded by mountain peaks and it was one of my favorite spots in Jasper. The snow had hardly been stepped on, making it a perfect place for a quiet sunset walk. The colours were just amazing that evening.
