Is it strange to proclaim that I love air fryers? Seriously, when you can make a restaurant quality dinner in just 15 minutes that is a reason to celebrate! This tender juicy salmon cooks perfectly in the air fryer in just minutes. Then the salmon gets brushed with a flavorful homemade teriyaki sauce that’s made with the best ingredients for maximum flavor! Your family will love this easy air fryer teriyaki salmon recipe!

Not only is this tasty recipe quick and easy, it’s an extremely healthy meal! Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are known to be good for heart and brain health. Not to mention it is a great source of protein. This juicy fish is the perfect addition to your weeknight dinner rotation!

Equipment Needed

PowerXL Air Fryer 7 QT Maxx Classic- If you have not invested in an air fryer for your kitchen, this is a must have appliance! I know yet another kitchen gadget, but it will free up oven space for the holidays and make so many sides and entrees faster and tastier!

Key Ingredients

salmon– choose 4-6 once salmon fillets at your grocery store’s seafood counter. I prefer skinless but either will cook well in the air fryer.

soy sauce– to use a little less sodium I always buy low sodium soy sauce, but either will work.

honey-gives the teriyaki a perfect sweetness that balances the saltiness of the soy sauce. You could also use a ¼ cup of brown sugar

ginger-fresh grated ginger root is the best option. Buy ginger root in the produce section at your grocery store. If you do not want to grate the ginger you can buy a paste that comes in a tub but do not use ginger powder, it will not taste the same.

cornstarch-isn’t for flavor but is what thickens your teriyaki sauce.

Step-By-Step Instructions 

To make the quick homemade teriyaki sauce combine the teriyaki sauce ingredients in a small saucepan. I grate the garlic and ginger directly into the pan using a Microplane.
Stir over medium heat for several minutes. Once the sauce begins to bubble remove from heat. Teriyaki sauce should instantly start to thicken from the cornstarch. It will continue to thicken as it cools.

Pat salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Spray the bottom of an air fryer basket with olive oil spray. Place salmon fillets in the basket in a single layer.

Set the air fryer temperature to 400 degrees and time for 10 minutes. Depending on the thickness of the salmon fillet it may take less time to cook. At 7 minutes remove the air fryer basket and use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. According to the FDA salmon is safe to eat at 145 degrees.

If the salmon needs more time to cook return to the air fryer and finish cooking. You can also go ahead and brush the fillets with the teriyaki sauce at this point.

Serving Suggestions

I love to serve teriyaki salmon on a bed of rice so it can soak up all of that delicious sticky sauce. You can use white rice or brown rice and there are many quick cooking varieties that can be cooked in the same time as the salmon.

Of course you need to add a green veggie to complete the meal. This fresh cucumber and carrot salad pairs perfectly with the sweet and spicy salmon.

Plate the cooked salmon and serve with extra teriyaki sauce and a sprinkle of sesame seeds and green onions.

Storage Tips

If you have leftovers the best way to store your salmon is in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Salmon is best eating within 3 days of cooking.

Expert Tips

  • I easily fit 4 salmon pieces into my air fryer. If you do not have a large basket with your fryer you may need to do multiple batches.
  • If you are cooking salmon with the skin on make sure to place in the air fryer skin side down to get crispy skin.

Do You Have to Flip Salmon in Air Fryer?

No! The circulating air from the air fryer will cook the salmon perfectly with no flipping required.

Can I put aluminum foil in an air fryer?

Well, yes and no. The answer is a little complicated. Yes aluminum foil can go in an air fryer safely without the fear of sparks like a microwave. However, air fryers work quickly because of hot air circulating. Foil will block the air flow causing the food to not cook as evenly. Most air fryers have a nonstick surface that is extremely easy to clean so skip the foil!

What If I Do Not Have an Air Fryer?

No, problem you can still make this salmon teriyaki recipe in your oven. Just preheat your oven to 425 degrees and cook on a foil lined baking sheet.

Ingredients

  • 4 4-6 ounce salmon fillets, skin removed
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, optional garnish

  • After the salmon has cooked for 7 minutes remove basket and check internal temperature with meat thermometer. Depending on the thickness of fillet continue cooking until the salmon reaches 145 degrees.

  • When salmon is cooked brush with teriyaki glaze. Allow salmon to rest for a few minutes before serving.
