Traditionally, these recipes are made in a large trifle dish. However, we thought it would be fun for parties to make individual servings. Guests can easily grab a cup and enjoy this berry trifle.

  • Get out the cups. You will need 6 clear plastic cups or mason jars for this recipe. It is best to use clear containers so the pretty layers can be seen. The cups should be 9 ounce and the mason jars 8 ounce.

How to serve:

The trifles taste best if served chilled. They need to be refrigerated for at least 2 hours before serving.

Red white and blue trifle tips:

  • If buying a prepared cake, make sure it’s at least 10 ounces in order to get 4 cups. You want to make sure that you have enough for all of the individual cups.
  • The trifle layers can be arranged into any order desired.
  • Place the layers neatly so they look like stripes.
  • Don’t make each layer too thick, otherwise they won’t all fit into the cup.
  • It is best to make the final layer whipped cream. This will help to keep the cake and berries in place. Then you can garnish with a few berries if you prefer. I just wouldn’t do an entire layer of fruit.

How should I store the leftover trifles?

  • Store the trifles in the fridge up to 2 days.
  • Cover tightly to ensure freshness with plastic wrap.
  • They are easy to store and taste great. However, they are best eaten fresh as they can become soggy. Since it is so simple, you can easily put this together in minutes the day of the event.

Variation ideas:

  • Substitute the fresh whipped cream with a tub of Cool Whip or canned whipped cream.
  • Instead of angel food cake or pound cake, use white cake. Either of these would be tasty and pretty in this trifle recipe.
  • Use blackberries instead of blueberries.
  • Use raspberries instead of strawberries or a mix of both.
  • Try layering with a pudding mixture. Vanilla pudding and Cheesecake flavors would be delicious in the trifle recipe.
  • Make this recipe in a traditional trifle dish. If you do not want to make individual cups, make the layers in a large trifle dish.

Should I use store bought cake or make my own?

Either one will work and taste great! If you’re looking for quick and easy, already prepared cake is the way to go.

However, if you want to make a homemade cake, feel free to do so. This recipe is so versatile and easy to adapt to what you have on hand.

4th of July fruit trifles taste amazing.

Individual desserts are so much fun to make and serve. They are so convenient at parties. Friends and family can easily get dessert and mingle and enjoy the party.

It is the perfect dessert for a festive treat. The red, white and blue layers are patriotic and delicious.

Impress everyone with this fabulous dessert. No one will guess it starts with store bought cake and takes minimum effort to make.
