My family loves this piri piri sauce recipe on everything from chicken, to beef, and seafood. I like to use it to spice up veggie dishes, too. Homemade sauce has so much more flavor than the kind you buy in a bottle, and it’s easy.

What is peri peri sauce?

It’s a blended sauce recipe made using peri peri (or piri piri) peppers.

These little peppers (they’re only about 1 inch long!) are also known as the African Bird’s Eye Chili. They’re hot peppers from Africa and are used in both African and Portuguese cuisine.

In our recipe, we use a blend of Thai red chilis (which are the same as piri piri chili peppers) and fire-roasted peppers. This gives our peri peri recipe a bold depth of flavor with a nice kick.

Are peri peri and piri piri the same?

Yes, they are! You’ll hear this sauce referred to as both “peri peri” and “piri piri”. They are the same and can be used interchangeably.

What does it taste like?

Peri peri sauce is garlicky, spicy, tangy, and so fresh!

How spicy is it?

It’s nice and spicy! We remove the seeds from our chili peppers before blending the sauce, which cuts down on the spice level a little bit. If you want it spicier, leave them in.

What is good with Peri Peri Sauce?

  • sweet paprika
  • fire roasted peppers
  • Thai red chilis seeds removed and finely chopped
  • sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar
  • lemon juice
  • zest of lemon
  • brown sugar
  • dried oregano
  • salt
  • cracked black pepper

How to Make Peri Peri Sauce

  1. Heat the oil, then saute the onions, garlic, and paprika for about 5 minutes until softened.
  2. Add all ingredients to a blender, including the onion mixture, and blend until nearly smooth.
  3. Enjoy with your favorite peri-peri recipes!

Peri Peri Sauce Tips

  • Adjust the heat to your taste using more or fewer chili peppers. Our sauce is medium-spicy.
  • If you’re using jarred fire-roasted peppers, discard the liquid.
