Fruit Salsa – Like Mother, Like Daughter

This fruit salsa is such a great healthy dessert, perfect for enjoying all spring and summer long. It’s delicious on it’s own, with cinnamon chips, or even over ice cream.

Fruit Salsa is basically a Fruit salad, that is diced up into smaller pieces, which makes it better for serving with cinnamon chips, instead of eating it by the spoonful. Though you can do that too. 

This fruit salsa is a great option for serving at summer parties, potlucks, or backyard barbecues. It’s also a great option for baby showers, bridal showers, etc. And makes a big bowlful, so it’s perfect for sharing. 

Below I’ve shared my favorite fruit mixture for this yummy fruit salsa, but you can pick whatever fruits sound good to you, and whatever is in season. In the summer I love adding fresh peach pieces (especially when I can get them straight from my tree). You could also add pineapple, grapes, cherries, etc. 

How to use fruit salsa?

Obviously my favorite choice is serving the fruit salsa with homemade cinnamon chips. But you can also serve it up with a variety of other breakfast or dessert items.

It’s delicious served over some plain or vanilla yogurt, or granola, or cereal. I also love it served over pancakes, waffles, or French toast instead, or in addition to syrup. It’s even good on top of a homemade smoothie bowl, or acai bowl.

It would also be delicious served over a bowl of ice cream, or on some angel food cake (instead of strawberries).

Ingredients needed to make fruit salsa:

  • Strawberries 
  • Green apple – you can use any apple variety you like, but crisp apples will hold themselves together better for this salsa. I like Granny Smith best, but Honey Crisp also works well.
  • Blueberries – I like picking out the smaller berries for this fruit salsa to keep them closer in size to the diced pieces of the other fruits.
  • Raspberries – Raspberries are soft enough you can add them as is to the “salsa”. You can also mash a couple of them up if you’d like.
  • Kiwi 
  • Mango
  • Lime – Toss the fruit in some lime juice to give it a nice tang, and also to help prevent the apple pieces from turning brown.
  • Honey – This adds just a little sweetness to the fruit. If your fruit is particularly tart you can add even more, or add in a little sugar if you want.

How to make fruit salsa?

Spend a few minutes preparing all your fruit, peel, cut off the stems, cut out the seeds, and chop it all up into small pieces. Then add it all into a large bowl and add the honey and lime juice and mix it all together. Serve it up with cinnamon chips, or however you want to eat it. 

Tips to make fruit salsa:

  • The texture will be slightly different, but if you want to save time you can use a food processor or food chopper to chop up your fruit for this salsa.
  • If your fruit is extra tart add an extra tablespoon or two of honey, or granulated sugar to toss them in and make the fruit salsa a little sweeter.
  • Don’t forget the lime juice (can sub for lemon) to keep the apple pieces from browning.

How long will fruit salsa keep?

This fruit salsa is best if served immediately, or within a couple hours of making it. The fruit salsa can be stored in the fridge for about 3 days though, with decent results. The fruit will just start to release more of their natural juices, so I recommend using a slotted spoon to transfer it to another bowl for serving to leave that extra juice behind.

Instructions

  • Add all your diced fruit to a large bowl and toss it together.

  • Pour lime juice and honey over the top and toss it together to coat the fruit in the mixture.

  • Serve immediately with cinnamon chips, on your cereal, smoothie bowl, ice cream, or by the spoonful. Or cover and store in the fridge until ready to eat.
