About this recipe

Getting ready for a special breakfast or brunch? Maybe you’re just on the hunt for something a little different for weekday mornings? Whatever it is that brought you here, you’re in for a treat! This quick and easy Vegan French Toast recipe is made for everyone!

Vegan French Toast is made without milk and eggs (obviously) and instead uses plant-based yogurt, water, and flour to create a thick coating. Infused into the yogurt mixture are the signature mouthwatering flavors of French toast – vanilla and cinnamon!

You can even recruit some pint-sized helpers to assist in making this kid-friendly recipe, since there are no messy eggs to crack!

Use whatever kind of bread you prefer and whatever day-old bread you have on hand. Keep in mind that the thicker the slice, the more time it will need to soak in the mixture. No one wants dry French toast!

This super easy French toast recipe has a perfectly crispy golden outside. It’s soft and tender inside, with a middle that doesn’t get soggy. Try it with a drizzle of maple syrup, vegan caramel sauce, lemon glaze, or strawberry sauce!

What you need

  • Plant-Based Yogurt – Any kind works, whether it’s coconut yogurt or made from almonds or cashews. You can even find yogurt made from soy or oats. Plain is best, however a little extra coconut or vanilla flavor is just fine.
  • Water – Water is added to thin out the yogurt so that it will coat the bread evenly.
  • All-Purpose Flour – Flour is used as a thickening agent and takes the place of the eggs. It helps the yogurt adhere to the bread.
  • Raw Sugar – Sugar adds sweetness. You can also use maple syrup if you prefer.
  • Vanilla Extract & Cinnamon – Two very common flavors used in most French toast recipes. They both add a ton of deliciousness!
  • Bread – The amount of yogurt mixture will be enough for 6 large slices or 9 smaller slices of bread.

How to make it

Grab a large mixing bowl and add all of the coating ingredients to it: yogurt, water, flour, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Mix well until thoroughly combined.

If your bread is not already sliced, cut into about 1” thick slices and preheat a lightly oiled skillet over medium-low heat.

Dip the bread into the batter for 10-15 seconds on each side. This is a thick batter so it may take longer to soak into the middle.

Transfer bread to the skillet and cook for 3-5 minutes per side until both sides are golden brown.

If your skillet is large enough, feel free to cook more than one piece at a time.

Serve immediately or keep warm until ready to eat!

TIP: To create a nonstick surface, use a vegan butter or coconut oil on your skillet or griddle.

FAQ

What kind of bread is best for French toast?

When making regular French toast, it’s best to use day-old bread. It should be sturdy enough to not get soggy or fall apart when soaked in the egg mixture. However, this vegan French toast has a thicker batter that doesn’t get absorbed as easily. As long as you’re using thicker slices, any bread will do! Day-old is fine but you will have to keep it soaking for a few seconds longer.
