Power Rangers (2017) Blu-ray Review

I remember many years ago on Saturday mornings when Power Rangers was on TV, with its rather over the top action scenes and huge monsters, then soon came the movies which I wasn’t overly keen on, more recently the Power Rangers have been rebooted in the latest in the new movie which is out on Blu-ray and DVD on the 31st July.

Saban’s Power Rangers tells the story of the origins of the five teenagers from Angel Grove who must become a fighting force to save the Earth as an alien threat comes to town. The teens must learn their abilities, work together and overcome their real-life issues before it’s too late.

Shortly before the release of the movie in Cinemas, here at Blazing Minds, we kept you up to date with teaser trailer and posters, we went behind the scenes, had exclusive clips and even brought you the first look at the Zords. So the chance to check out the Blu-ray release before its release was something that we had to bring you.

So as I mentioned earlier, Power Rangers is a reboot of the franchise and takes us back to find out how the teenagers become the Rangers, the starts with the original Rangers taking a last stand on planet Earth in a time long forgotten and Zordon (Bryan Cranston) & Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) became enemies.

Then we shoot to present day and the introductions to the Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Billy (RJ Cyler), Zack (Ludi Lin) and Trini (Becky G.) as they go through their day to day lives before finding the coloured gems that give them their Ranger abilities.

Director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) has produced an interesting take on the Power Rangers back story and to reboot the movie franchise, although I did find myself drifting away from the film over its long running time, the action and the personal stories of the teens did have me interested in the majority of the film.

Power Rangers looks very good on Blu-ray, the images are sharp and the colours vibrant in many of the action scenes, even the darker lit scenes are very nicely done.

When it comes to the sound the Blu-ray boasts a Dolby Atmos soundtrack and this works very well on a 5.1 surround system with some nice bass during action sequences as well as great use of the rear speakers giving a good atmospheric sound and the feeling of being slap bang in the middle of the action.

Power Rangers Blu-ray Extra Features

Not overly packed with features, but some that are great to see, there is an audio commentary with Director Dean Israelite and Writer John Gatins, a featurette called The Power of the Present, several deleted/alternative/extended scenes, outtakes and the Theatrical trailer.

The film stars Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games franchise) as Rita Repulsa, Bryan Cranston (Godzilla, Breaking Bad) as Zordon and Bill Hader (Trainwreck, The BFG) as Alpha 5.

I’ve never been a big fan of Power Rangers, but overall I found the movie fun and good to watch, as I said it looks and sounds great on Blu-ray, so if you are a Power Rangers fan then maybe this is one for you to check out and add to your movie collection.

I have to say that the new suits are looking much better than the original TV show suits, they have that very metallic, superhero, look that we have been seeing in a lot of movies lately and they do seem to have that Marvel Universe look to them!

Power Rangers is out now on Digital Download and is available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on the 31 July.
