Move Data To Slack Using A CSV ) Or Text File

Is there a transition to Slack being considered? Utilize our import tool in conjunction with a CSV or delimited text file to transfer your data from other platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Skype. To get comprehensive information on the process of importing data to Slack from other platforms, please refer to the “Guide to Slack import and export tools.”

Set up your CSV or text file

In order to start, it is necessary to configure the CSV/text file in a manner that facilitates its upload to a Slack workspace. To guarantee proper data importation, it is imperative to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • In order to maintain clarity and organization, it is recommended to separate messages by row. This practice allows for a more systematic and structured presentation of information, facilitating comprehension and ease of reading.
  • In academic writing, multi-line messages should be indicated by raw newlines, while ensuring that the content is wrapped inside quotation marks. Additionally, message data should be separated by columns. The sequence in which columns must be arranged is as follows:
  • The user’s content does not provide any specific information to be rewritten academically.
  • Please arrange the messages in chronological order based on their time stamps, with the earlier ones appearing first.
  • It is imperative that all data be consolidated into a solitary, uncompressed file.
  • The HTML content will be rendered in an escaped or omitted manner, except for hyperlinks that are included in the messages.

The following is an illustration of the desired format for the file:

“1357559471”,”team-marketing”,”kathleen”,”When do our new print ads launch? I need to coordinate with the agency about our big event.”
“1357559472”,”team-marketing”,”olivia”,”Very soon!”

Please be aware that currently, it is only possible to import fundamental components such as channels, messages, and user accounts using CSV or text file formats. If the user intends to import data from another Slack workspace, it is recommended to utilize other import tools to ensure the importation of more comprehensive and advanced sorts of data.

Upload your file to Slack

  1. To access your workspace, just click on the name of your workspace located in the top left corner of your desktop screen.
Navigate to the menu and choose the option labeled “Settings & administration.” Subsequently, proceed to click on “Workspace settings.”
  2. To initiate the process of importing or exporting data, please locate and click on the “Import/Export” option located in the upper right corner of the interface.
  3. Select the “Import” option located adjacent to the CSV/Text file.
  4. Please choose the “Choose file” option located underneath the section labeled “Your CSV file.” The comma is typically used as the default delimiter, however it is possible to modify the delimiter.
  5. Initiate the import process by selecting the “Start” option. It is advisable to keep the Import page active during the file uploading process. Upon completion, the user will receive an email notification and will be prompted to proceed on the webpage.
  6. To see the summary, please click on the “View summary” option provided in the email. To access the Information necessary section, navigate to the Imports page and choose the corresponding option. Subsequently, proceed to delineate the user and channel data.

Map user and channel data

After the completion of the file upload process, the subsequent step involves the mapping of data to appropriate locations inside the Slack platform.

  1. Firstly, users are required to review the menu in order to select the method by which they will map people to pre-existing members inside the Slack platform. In the event that the option to “Create & invite user” or “Create a disabled user, without inviting them” is selected, it is necessary to provide an email address.
  2. Select batch actions for all users. To apply actions, you can switch the toggle to “Unmapped” to target individuals who are not already mapped to existing users, or choose “All” to apply actions to all users. Alternatively, one may apply a specific action to each person by navigating to the “View users” section.
  3. Subsequently, proceed to delineate the channels: Please evaluate the menu options in order to choose the most suitable method for mapping channels inside the Slack platform. In the event that a channel name corresponds to an already established public channel, an automatic mapping process will be initiated to facilitate the merging of the two channels. In the event that there are no existing public channel names that correspond to the given criteria, a novel channel will be generated.
  4. Within the context of batch activities, users have the ability to select an option that may be universally applied to all channels. Alternatively, inside the “View channels” section, users have the option to individually select an action for each channel.
  5. Please select the “Save changes” option.
  6. Please carefully evaluate your import and thereafter choose the option “Yes” to proceed with the import.
