Who is Playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid?

It was announced in July 2019 that singer Halle Bailey would play the live-action version of Ariel. “After an exhaustive search, it was abundantly evident that Halle possesses that unique combination of personality, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — along with a magnificent singing voice,” director Rob Marshall said in a statement at the time, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Ariel will be Halle’s first starring part in a feature film; she is best known as one half of the musical combo Chloe x Halle with her sister, Chloe Bailey. Halle had previously appeared in minor roles in films such as Last Holiday and Disney Channel’s Let It Shine when she was a child.

Though the 22-year-old actress has a few more significant films in post-production – she will play Young Nettie in the 2023 film musical The Color Purple — she is most recognized for her role as Sky Forster on the Freeform sitcom Grown-ish.

As soon as Halle’s casting was confirmed, however, the young actress was assailed with extreme online racism. Social media users created the trending hashtag #NotMyAriel, uploaded racist images and offensive comments, and pledged to boycott the film upon its release.

Halle did not explicitly address the hostility she received until the summer of 2022, when she told Variety that she sought counsel from her grandparents, who endured decades of persecution, on how to overcome such hatred.

“It was an inspiring and lovely thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you,’” she said.

“What that would have meant for me, how it would have altered my confidence and self-belief, and everything else. Things that appear so insignificant to others are enormous to us,” Halle remarked. “I want the young girl inside of me and the little girls just like me who are watching to realize that they are important and should be princesses in every way.

There’s no reason that they shouldn’t be.” Period. Despite having to undergo such online abuse, Halle’s time spent as Princess Ariel has surely been life-changing — during filming, she paid homage to the movie by becoming a cat mom and calling her feline Poseidon. We genuinely enjoy seeing it.

Does the Little Mermaid Have a Poster or Trailer?

Yes! Early in September 2022, the official teaser trailer for The Little Mermaid was revealed. In the one-minute-long animation, we are taken on a magnificent journey across the ocean as aquatic life darts through the water.

Eventually, we observe a recognizable scaly fin swimming through a sinking ship. In the last seconds of the video, we get our first glimpse of Halle as Ariel while she sings a clip of the film’s iconic song “Part of Your World.”

People shared videos of young Black girls and children of all colors reacting with pleasure and astonishment to Halle’s Ariel, disproving the discriminatory notion that youngsters would not accept a Black version of the Disney princess.

What Kind of New Music Will Be in the Little Mermaid?

Alan Menken announced in the 2021 episode of Disney’s For Scores podcast that the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid will have four brand-new, original songs.

Menken had previously told other media sites that new songs for Eric and Ariel, King Triton, and Scuttle will be a “blend” of his and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s respective musical approaches. Lin-Manuel spoke with Collider in 2021 about the difficulties of composing fresh music for a Disney classic he himself cherished as a child.

“So much of my work on The Little Mermaid was driven by this desire,” he explained. “I didn’t compose any new songs for Sebastian the Crab because I adore his existing material so much. I thought, “I can’t. Nope, not me. I cannot accomplish it. I was able to write for several more characters in that film. Every beloved song from The Little Mermaid remains in the film; we simply found new situations to musicalize. That is very difficult.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda announced earlier this year that one of the new songs will be used in a sequence when Ariel is in her human form, on land, and hinted that Daveed Diggs, who voices Sebastian, “may rap” in the film.

Halle Bailey has previously stated that composing music for the film was the “most thrilling” aspect of filming. Co-stars Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy have lauded Halle’s vocals, with Javier describing Halle’s vocal powers as “extraterrestrial” and Melissa adding that Halle’s singing caused numerous co-stars to cry on set.

Melissa stated in June while speaking on Watch What Happens Live, “That girl has deep roots, and she sings from the heart.” When I heard [her singing the song], about seven of us immediately fell into tears. We’re already bawling just thinking about it, truth be told.

Will You Be Able to Stream the Little Mermaid?

After The Little Mermaid’s limited theatrical run concludes, the picture will be made available on the Disney+ streaming service. According to Disney’s prior release patterns, the picture will not be available for streaming until 45 to 90 days following its theatrical debut.

Who are the Voice Actors in The Little Mermaid?

Sebastian, the crab’s voice will be provided by Daveed Diggs, who is most known for his work in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton. Diggs joined the cast in October 2019 and will supply Sebastian’s voice.

In June of 2019, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay joined the cast, with Tremblay providing the voice for Flounder and Awkwafina for Scuttle. In order for Scuttle to appear in underwater scenes, she will be represented as a female diving bird instead of a male seagull as in the original.

Who is Behind The Little Mermaid?

Rob Marshall, best known for directing the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Chicago, is the film’s director. The Little Mermaid’s story is credited to David Magee, Rob Marshall, and Tim Rice.

John DeLuca, David Magee, and Jane Goldman served as the film’s talented screenwriters. Alan Menken will return to compose new songs for the film alongside producer Lin-Manuel Miranda. Oscar-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe and Academy Award-winning editor Wyatt Smith are responsible for the film’s cinematography and editing, respectively. In addition to Marc Platt, Miranda, Marshall, and DeLuca, four other brilliant producers contributed to the film’s creation.

Industrial Light & Magic, Wt FX, Moving Picture Company, and Framestore will produce the visual effects for the film.

Walt Disney Pictures, Lucamar Productions, Marc Platt Productions, and 5000 Broadway Productions are the film’s production firms.
