Shamshera Movie Review: Is It Worth To Watch?

Shamshera Movie Review: Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Vaani, SANJAY DUTT, Saurabh Shukla (who is not a haka), and way too many stupid Brits (Though they never apologized for anything they did to us, I’m sorry for this film)

Karan Malhotra is the director (the one who gave us one of the best commercial potboilers in Bollywood, Agneepath, although the skeleton of its story was of course adapted by the OG)

What’s Excellent: Sanjay Dutt portraying a roaring character for the 4675th time and yet making it convincing; graphics so good that I might have liked the film more if I hadn’t been deaf (along with dumb maybe)

What’s Wrong: The production company’s choice to make such a picture despite the tremendous failure of Thugs of Hindostan marks the start of the film’s downfall.

*BreaksMultiple. Numerous.

Watch or not to watch: Only if you haven’t seen Thugs of Hindostan and still go to the movies for the visuals!

Theatrical Release is available.

Showtime: 157 minutes

Shamshera (Ranbir Kapoor) is the chief of the Khameran tribe in northern India, who gives his life for his people’s independence. Following the age-old theme of a “son realizing his father’s unfulfilled aspirations,” 25 years later (set in the early 1800s), we find Balli, who earns his leave by stealing luxury items (which he teaches his tribe’s children).

For some reason, Balli always declines to be a part of the Khameran tribe (which Ranbir should’ve done with the film), but he keeps coming back to ‘his people’. He continues to pursue Sona (Vaani Kapoor), a dancer and asks her to marry him because he will one day be king.

His desire of joining the British army is dashed when he meets Shuddh Singh (Sanjay Dutt), who is also the murderer of his father. Rest certain, you’re all smart enough to understand how a legend usually emerges to defend his people and what occurs afterward.

Script Analysis

The genuine villain of this film, written by Neelesh Misra and Khila Bisht, is not Sanjay Dutt. Misra, a gifted lyricist, and his college companion Bisht fall into the trap of ‘too much to say, too little to express’. There is a distinct lack of direction in terms of where this plot should go.

If you’re going to say it’s a father-son picture, why not spend some time making an emotional connection between the audience and them? Or, if you’re telling a story about a rebel against the might of the British government, make the motivation evident so that it’s either too relatable or too heroic to connect.

The cinematography of Anay Goswamy (Fitoor, Super 30 fame) and the film’s background score rescue several stars for the film. The film begins on an incredibly promising note amidst the opaque, hazy mountains of Nubra Valley, giving me optimism that Karan would repeat the Agneepath enchantment, but as the film develops, the certainty I had began to fall like boulders from Leh’s mountains.

With phrases like “Ghee daal Diya garam garam, aati nahi Sharam Sharam,” it’s unclear whether Piyush Mishra (dialogue writer) intended to make it funny or not.

Star Performance

Before I go any further, those who are wondering why I wrote the names of the cast in a specific order at the beginning of the article should read on. Two Ranbir Kapoors due to double-roles, simply Vaani (no surname) because she’s (not even) half-important to the tale, Sanjay Dutt in caps because he’s roaring throughout, and an exceedingly terrible joke with Saurabh Shukla due to his character speaking in rhymes throughout the entire film.

It’s courageous of Ranbir Kapoor to try a dacoit-drama as his first commercial masala potboiler, but I can see why he’s avoided such films up until now. His ‘strict’ appearance and characteristic vocal tone do nothing to assist him to develop a fascination for his character. At times, he delivers dialogue as though it were spoken by Jordan from Rockstar.

Sanjay Dutt emerges as a better performer to fit into the realm of Shamshera due to his previous work in this genre. Expect nothing resembling a Kancha Cheena performance, and you will not be disappointed. Vaani Kapoor, as previously said, was as insignificant to the plot as Katrina Kaif’s Suraiya in Thugs of Hindostan. The decision to provide Saurabh Shukla with rhyming phrases without rhyme or reason is a big factor in his royal waste.

Direction And Music

Karan added that he and Mithoon worked for 7 months to produce an ‘enthralling’ background score, which transfers incredibly well on the cinema hall’s bassy speakers. But only if he had put in the same amount of effort in the narration and screenplay. He was forced to keep a ‘crows VS British Army’ action sequence in the climax due to a lack of excellent ideas.

Brothers, I was a huge fan of Agneepath, but this was Karan’s first try at a ‘not-already-established’ tale, and it’s not all his fault. His dramatic approach to the subject helps to create the necessary atmosphere, but it’s like visiting Leh-Ladakh in a crowded automobile; it makes no sense.

Chinni Prakash’s attention to Ji Huzoor’s choreography is exactly what the film’s narrative required. Due to the lack of chemistry between the stars, none of the songs work, and even Fitoor’s stunning vistas are tolerable in the film.

Is It Worthwhile to Watch Shamshera?

Don’t even bother watching it on OTT; it’ll just squander your download limit. There is no story here. Just jumbled sequences with bad CGI and acting. You’ll end yourself sleeping off in the theatre or fiddling with your phone.

Is Shamshera a Flop?

Is Shamshera a hit or a flop? Against a production budget of 150 crores, Ranbir Kapoor’s period drama ‘Shamshera’ has so far grossed 42.48 crores in India and 63.58 crores internationally.

Why Did Shamshera Fail?

“If Shamshera did not perform well at the box office, it indicates that the audience did not enjoy the picture. The film failed because the content was poor “, the actor explained. Previously, Sanjay Dutt spoke out against the film’s box office disaster. He bemoaned the fact that the picture was panned by those who “didn’t even watch it.”

The Last Word

After all, was said and done, Karan Malhotra and YRF saw how Thugs of Hindostan faced the wrath of the Indian audience and nevertheless went ahead to film Sharamshera on a similar pattern, which is just as ambitious as KRK’s Deshdrohi 2.
