The World Rugby eligibility rules, which went into effect in January 2022, now permit players to represent a second country even if they have previously done so.

Before they can represent their new nation, the players must first “stand down” from the global tournament for three years. Additionally, the participant must be of that nation’s nationality, either by birth or through at least one grandparent.

By transferring countries ahead of time to play for the new state at the RWC 2023 in France, these three participants have already taken the opportunity of the new laws.

#1. Henry Thomas to Wales

After including the previous England performer in his 54-man initial Rugby World Cup roster, head instructor Warren Gatland claims that uncapped Wales prop Thomas may offer his team “something a little bit unique.”

The eligibility rules for Rugby World Rugby were changed in 2022, so the 31-year-old, who earned seven caps for England between 2013 and 2014, is now qualified to play for Wales. Swansea is where Thomas’ father is from.

In the 2013 Six Nations, Henry was reportedly selected for England as an injury substitute for Alex Corbisiero, however, he was not utilised. Then, during the 2013 Tour of Argentina, he participated and earned his initial two caps towards Argentina by coming off the bench.

Gatland intends to evaluate him as he attempts to increase the depth of Wales’ front row.

“He’s been at Montpellier and participated with them earning the league,” the head trainer of Wales revealed. We chatted with him a long time ago. He most likely brings something unique. The tight-five is our main area of attention. We require increased quickness and flexibility.

#2. Nathan Hughes to Fiji

Hughes, the former No. 8 for England, has declared that he is willing to play for Fiji at the 2018 Rugby World Cup. Hughes earned the final of his 22 caps for his adopted nation in the 2019 Six Nations, and now that the criteria for playing have changed, he intends to play for his native land.

He was chosen to play for the Fiji Warriors side in the Pacific Rugby Cup 2013 in February by Inoke Male, the then-coach of the Fiji 15s. Nemani Nadolo, a winger who later signed with Leicester Tigers, served as the Warriors team’s captain, and he was chosen vice-captain.

Hughes joined Wasps of the English Premier League in March 2013. Hughes put in significant efforts during the 2013–14 Premiership campaign and thought carefully about his international allegiance since he was qualified for both Fiji and Samoa in 2016 as well as England.

Hughes committed to join the Bristol Bears for a period of three years, commencing with the 2019–20 campaign, it was revealed in January 2019. Hughes was a member of England’s elite player squad (EPS), a 45-man provisional roster, during their preseason training camp in August 2016.

He was appointed to the practice team for the Autumn Internationals on September 30, 2016. He debuted for England in November 2016 when, in the 53rd minute of a match versus South Africa, he came off the bench to replace Tom Wood. Between 2016 and 2019, he received 22 caps, the most recent of which was versus Scotland on March 16 at Twickenham.

Nathan Hughes Remarked

Hughes responded, “Yes, 100 Percent,” when asked if he was available, adding, “I’m concentrating completely on Black Rams and just performing as well as I am able and allowing the selectors do their job.”

“The trainers and their workers are all currently in Europe, so I’m not sure when they’ll be flying to Japan,” he stated. We’ll hold off till that time. We will decide if he chooses me at that time, but we still have two games left and we want to finish as high as possible in the standings before moving on.”

Fans and instructors alike have been supportive of Hughes’ ambition to play for Fiji.

“Nathan Hughes is an outstanding talent, in the opinion of previous Fijian trainer Ben Ryan, and would be a valuable asset to any squad. It would be great to have him engaged if he is qualified to play for Fiji.”

#3. Ruaridh Mcconnochie to Scotland

The winger, who earned two England caps in 2009, was selected back in January for Scotland’s Six Nations training squad. The controversial new eligibility rule from World Rugby permits players to change their dedication after a three-year stand-down period.

If they have a strong and credible connection to the country they have moved to through birthright, allows the 31-year-old winger who serves club rugby for Bath to wear the thistle.

McConnochie earned his England Sevens debut in 2015 at the Dubai Sevens, continuing his career at Hartpury where he also competed for Great Britain in the Student Sevens where he earned the World University Sevens Championship. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, he won a silver medal for Great Britain and competed for England in the Rugby World Cup final.

On the path to England winning the gold medal in Vancouver in March 2017, he also touched down during the team’s 14-12 quarterfinal victory over New Zealand.

On January 31, 2018, McConnochie agreed to a professional deal with premier England team Bath for the 2018–19 Aviva Premiership season. He was one of four uncapped athletes selected for England’s preliminary Rugby World Cup squad for training in June 2019.

Although McConnochie had to leave the starting lineup due to a hip injury in England’s initial warm-up match against Wales, he was still included in Eddie Jones’ 31-man team. Before once more withdrawing from the match against Wales due to injury, McConnochie was also listed for the second warm-up.

Due to his Scottish father, McConnochie was qualified to represent Scotland in international competition, but he chose to represent England, where he was born. On September 6, 2019, when England played Italy, he received his first full England cap. Starting on the wing, McConnochie played for 51 minutes until he was substituted by Joe Cokanasiga of the Bath club. During the initial half of England’s facile Rugby World Cup 2019 pool stage victory against the USA, the winger scored his first point for his country, a try.

McConnochie was a member of the Scotland team that competed in the 2023 Six Nations Championship in January of that year. Under a World Rugby rule that permits a change to another nation for which a player qualifies after more than three years have passed since his final match for England, he became qualified to play for Scotland.

McConnochie claimed

Shortly after deciding to play sevens for England in 2016, McConnochie claimed in a newspaper article that “my mother and father are both Scottish through and through.”

“They cracked a clever laugh about the entire situation. They haven’t yet abandoned me.”
