INTERVIEW: Sarah Mae Chilton

Welcome! Welcome! Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with an incredibly talented artist who’s been making waves in the music scene. With a unique sound and a captivating presence, Sarah Mae Chilton has been leaving a lasting impression on listeners everywhere. Let’s dive right in and get to know more about her music and creative journey. Your music is known for its distinct style and sound. Can you tell us about the influences and experiences that have shaped your musical journey so far?

I Love pop music! Before coming to Nashville I was digging the indie pop scene in my college town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina where I got to work at Moogfest Music festival as an intern. I studied silent disco in college and loved electronic music.

After moving to Nashville I eventually got hired at my current job Tootsie’s, where I sing country music and fell in love with that genre too. With my synth keyboard of course!

My music is southern glitter pop. Pop music written from a true Carolina southern girl.

Your latest single, “Dreamcatcher” that just came out – super exciting. What’s the story behind this track, and what emotions or messages were you hoping to convey through it?

The idea for ‘Dreamcatcher,’ was born when my co-writer friend Jan Buckingham gave me a dreamcatcher for Christmas. We have written several Christmas songs together and I felt like the gift was magical.

I wanted to write a song about the dreamcatcher but needed a good concept…

It made me think what if I had a dream one night and that dreamcatcher turned into a handsome man who would save me and love me forever.

When I sat to write with Jan one morning, like we weekly do, to tell her the concept she loved it and we went to work she typed and I sang and the song was born. A song about a beautiful dream.

Collaborations can often lead to some incredible music. Is there any artist or producer you dream of working with in the future? What would your dream collaboration look like?

I would love to work with Marina Diamandis who first released Marina and the diamonds. She is a pop queen with a mission. I also would love to collaborate with Kelsea Ballerini. I love what she’s doing in the country world right now.

The music industry has seen significant changes in recent years, especially with the rise of streaming platforms. How do you think these changes have impacted emerging artists like yourself, and what strategies have you found most effective in reaching your audience?

I feel that it is giving the creatives an opportunity to directly connect with their audience like never before. I have tried to create the best content I can and honor and respect my audience. Social media is like in real life. Do unto others! And create something worth supporting!

Many fans love to hear about the creative process. Can you walk us through how you typically go about creating a new song, from the initial concept to the final recording?

My process starts either in a writers room or by myself after an idea hits or a melody.

Usually a song is easier to record if we songwriters come together and get with a talented producer like the one on ‘Dreamcatcher,’ John Willis.

I had made a scratch track in my apartment with that drum beat to show him what I wanted.

I told him ‘mystic Kacey Musgraves,’ and he colored the track. And it was born.

I also adore recording with full band in a studio… I did that on my ‘Tucson,’ record out now on all streaming platforms.

Eventually I’m going to record a full band album in Nashville.

What’s your favorite part about performing live, and do you have any memorable onstage moments you’d like to share?

I love the connection with the audience! When they stay with you through the show and you have fun with them and get them dancing! That is the absolute best! Isn’t that what music is about to have a good time? I sure think so.

I had a fan come up and request my songs. That was a pretty cool moment for me as an artist. It’s like wow someone out there is listening. I will always be there for people like that. They mean everything.
