INTERVIEW: Neo-soul Riser David Morin

1.) We’re very happy to have some time today with acclaimed neo-soul artist David Morin; greetings and salutations, David! Before we meander down the proverbial Q&A musical pathway, how have the Dog Days of the summer of ‘23 been treating you?

The dog days of summer have been sultry and sweet. I moved to Mexico and have really The continual supply of vitamin D have boosted my spirit and my overall mental health. I bought a motorcycle and have been exploring a new places and just living my best life. A real dramatic change from being terminally online and in Vancouver’s incessant rain.

2.) Major congratulations on your forthcoming single Flashing Lights which is set to light up the world when it’s released this September 4! What served as the inspiration for this rousing new gem of a tune?

Thank you ! I’m excited for this release ! It’s and sort of vision board for the future i wanted to speak. I literally wrote down what I wanted to experience in life and I’m now I’m actually living the experiences that these songs lyrics are manifesting in real life right now. I was inspired to write this track wanting more from life. I feel like I needed to speak this feeling into existence… at the time I had just broken my leg and was coming out of Covid 19’s relentless attack and the gig economy and was feeling unsure about myself or my Music and future. Once again music was there to get me out of it.

3.) Who was your producer on Flashing Lights and what did the collaboration between artist and producer look like in the studio?

I’ve been working with an artist named Koyla. We first met in Goa who was introduced to me by my friend Nav, who is also my manager. He’s beats are insane and we’ve been working together for many years now. We live in different countries so most of what we do is remote. But basically he’ll send me something he’s working on and 4/5 times I love them all. Then from there we chat about changes and arrangements and he puts his magic touch into it. Go check out @koylamusic !

4.) Flashing Lights sprang to full-fledged life recording-wise in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. What made San Jose del Cabo the perfect place to record this new single?

Honestly I could have been anywhere but I’m glad it was here. I think this place helped to get into a creative flow. It was the perfect scenery for the theme of the song too.. palm tree, white sand…

5.) How is Flashing Lights similar to some of your past musical offerings? How is it different?

It’s more light hearted than the other stuff. More wholesome. A lot of this album can be pretty serious and moody, and this track is less about a broken past and more of a mended future.

6.) Flashing Lights is plucked from your upcoming new album Flow State! What can you tell us about the new album?

It’s was a cumulative of a bunch of songs I had been working on for the past 8 years and the transformation of dealing with depression and coming out of it. I felt like you have to get into a state of flow in life in order to make even make music.

7.) In the wake of the release of all of this amazing new music, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit in the coming weeks and months?

I’m actually deep in writing more music. I just finished a year of gigging out here in Mexico and dialling in my solo set. I cannot wait to tour this new record though. I’ll be announcing fate dates very soon starting with Brazil and South America.

8.) Who inspires you musically?

In terms of music ? That’s a tough one. I have so many. I have my roots in 90s rnb and neo soul but I also love Motown, disco and funk. Im really inspired by new artists who have been melting their new sounds with the more classic soul music as well.

9.) You hail from Vancouver. How do those roots inform you as both a musical artist and as a person?

Growing up in Vancouver we didn’t have a lot of soul music here. My friends would send me mix tapes from Seattle with d’Angelo and musiq soulchild and the like… so the scarcity gave it a sort of rarity that made more valuable and meaningful.
