History Has a Laugh: Funny Man “Weird Al” Yankovic Lands First Two Emmy Nominations for Biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”

Al Yankovic – A.K.A. “Weird Al” Yankovic – is the heir apparent to such 1950s musical funny men as J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Sheb Wooley and has been making the world collectively laugh uproariously since the 1980s. His knack for turning a well-established hit song into a hilarious parody – think Beat It as Eat It and Gangsta’s Paradise as Amish Paradise – is famous. Naturally it was only a matter of sticking around for four decades or so before the singer and songwriter finally got his very own biopic. And what a movie it was: Weird: The Al Yankovic Story featured none other than Daniel Radcliffe as the titular hero making America safe for democracy, novelty tunes and afros. The efforts Yankovic and Co. put forth to bring this stranger than fiction story to the screen paid off big-time today in the form of Weird Al’s first two Emmy nominations.

Our UHF pals over at The Hollywood Reporter made a world full of lighthearted souls happy today with the news that industry staple “Weird Al” Yankovic is the recipient of two Emmy nominations for his Roku biographical film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. The nominations come in the form of a writing nomination for the 63-year old comedian as well as one for original music and words for the catchy gem Now You Know.

As anticipated, Weird Al issued a subdued and understated press release where he vaguely touched upon the recognition he had just received: “Sorry for screaming at the top of my lungs, but WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY JUST GOT EIGHT EMMY NOMINATIONS!!!!”

As if those two nominations weren’t icing enough on an already rich cake, Yankovic’s on-screen alter-ego Daniel Radcliffe nabbed a nomination for lead actor in a limited series or movie. The film was also presented with nominations for outstanding television movie, outstanding writing and a grab-bag of technical categories.

Congratulations not only to the worldwide institution known as “Weird Al” Yankovic, but also to the voting body of the Emmys for finally giving this underdog his well-deserved due!
