Director Adam McKay Headed Back to Netflix for His Next Film

One of the more polarizing films which streaming behemoth Netflix unleashed upon the world-at-large was the Best Picture-nominated end of the world satire Don’t Look Up. A whole lot of folks showed up for the star-studded marquee names which frontline this flick about what precisely an Earth teetering on the edge of a global disaster would look like: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet and Meryl Streep all did fun and subversive turns in the film which – depending on which side of the street you park your car on – either left folks hot or cold. This yellow journalist personally dug the movie (Memo to Netflix: Release Don’t Look Up on blu-Ray already) and was left at the end of its runtime looking forward to further collaborations between the movie’s director Adam McKay and Netflix. According to our It’s the End of the World audiophiles over at The Hollywood Reporter, my errant and nerdish wish has now officially been granted.

Director Adam McKay will be helming his latest film entitled Average Height, Average Build for streamer Netflix. The new movie will reportedly be a potent cocktail of a couple of different film genres (much like Don’t Look Up) including comedy and serial killer nail-biter. The story is said to focus on a lurking killer who devilishly devises a plan to use political lobbyists (a species worse than the cockroach, Dear and Constant Reader) as a means to change certain laws so it will then be easier for him to commit his crimes. Hey, if you ever keep up with the daily news headlines, this might actually be more of a documentary than a clever political parable; jus’ sayin.’

Much like his earlier efforts like The Big Short, McKay has already lined up a pretty enviable cast for his latest film which includes the likes of Robert Pattinson, Forest Whitaker, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr. and Danielle Deadwyler. McKay did the writing on this one and if you’re still not impressed with the above cast of hallowed actors, fear not: Word ‘round the old movie projector has it that there are still a number of significant roles yet to be cast.

Say what you will about McKay, but he is one of the few filmmakers working in big, mainstream American cinema who still challenges audiences with material darker than the latest Avengers or Conjuring movies. That has to count for something, right?

Average Height, Average Build is set to begin filming later in the summer in the Boston, MA area.
