Apple and Sony Announce Release Date of Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix Collaboration “Napoleon”

By anyone’s good measure, Joaquin Phoenix is having a pretty busy period of time. The Oscar-winning Joker actor has one new film bookmarked for release later this month – Beau Is Afraid – and is currently deep in the throes of shooting the very much anticipated Joker II. What’s more, he’s got no less than two new films in the pipeline with Beau director Ari Aster; whew! But in case you think the kid brother to River Phoenix is simply not busy enough then perhaps you’d best think again. According to our Inventing the Abbotts fans over at The Hollywood Reporter, a movie which Phoenix has already shot is finally getting a release date and we’ve got all of the details right here, Ladies and Gents!

Director Ridley Scott (Alien, The Last Duel) and his Gladiator co-star Joaquin Phoenix have re-teamed for yet another historical drama in the form of the Apple Original Films and Sony

big-budgeted motion picture Napoleon. The film, which has been wrapped in the can for a short while, finally has a release date which should make those holiday-inclined movie watchers happy indeed: Napoleon has landed a coveted holiday opening date of November 22, just days away from Thanksgiving. As any box-office watcher worth their salt can tell you, this holiday slot is ideal for any movie, especially one which has ‘Award-winner’ written all over it. Shortly after its premiere at the cinemas it is anticipated that the film will then make its streaming debut via Apple+.

Napoleon tells the story of the far-famed and – in some quarters – controversial French leader and military genius. Scott’s take on this oft-told story will focus on Napoleon’s rise to the upper echelons of power and his fiery and tempestuous relationship with his wife and soul mate, Josephine. Phoenix portrays Napoleon while his Better Half is essayed by Vanessa Kirby.

Written by wordsmith extraordinaire David Scarpa, Napoleon hails from Apple Studios in conjunction with Scott’s own production shingle Scott Free Productions.

Napoleon marks the second big theatrical release announcement from Apple: Last week we here at Vents wrote about another big budgeted film from the streamer – Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon – which has also eschewed the typical streaming diagram of either solely debuting on the small screen or doing a simultaneous big and small screen release in favor of  a short yet exclusive theatrical premiere (Killers theatrically opens limited on October 6 before going wide on the 20th of that same month). Apple is clearly attempting to have its cake and eat it, too: Keep filmmakers of the caliber of Scorsese and Scott happy with some theatrical love for their hard work, and raking in the cash streaming-wise after an abbreviated theatrical window is given to its productions. Will everyone win in this scenario? Here’s hoping!

We’ll see everyone on line for the opening of Napoleon on November 22! Now go get some rest, Joaquin; you’ve earned it!
