INTERVIEW: Vittoria Vespara

We’re excited to be speaking today with acclaimed musician and independent artist extraordinaire Vittoria Vespara; greetings and salutations, Vittoria! Before we meander down the Q&A pathway, how goes your 2023 thus far?

Hello Vents Magazine! It’s a pleasure and an honor to be speaking with you about my new released Album, “Freedom Fly”. I am extremely flattered that you wanted to

interview me for your magazine. Thanks so much! This year has been full of amazing transitional moments and great personal growth for me. This album has been a long

time coming and I am so pleased to finally share it with whoever is interested in listening.

Super-congratulations on your brand-new and utterly amazing Techno/Pop album Freedom Fly! What’s the story behind the best album of 2023? How did this gem come into being?

Thanks so much for your enthusiasm about my art. I appreciate that so much! As for calling it “the best”, all I can to say to that is the album is at least “my best” for 2023. Each track created has a unique story behind it… I wanted to bring forward encouraging messages to others suffering with mental conditions. After these last few years, mental health issues increased substantially with what we have had to go through. Everyone’s experiences are different however, suffering, in my opinion, is the common thread that makes us all one large tribe. People have been traumatized, and I wanted to create songs to help them overcome difficult obstacles cultivating hope while at the same time, giving myself a pep talk as well!

Freedom Fly is a veritable grab-bag of musical goodies, featuring strong bass lines that immediately grab you, retro tinged synths, Indie style rhythms and strong and meaningful messages which truly resound! When working on the new album, did you intend on having such a multi-faceted presentation of different styles of music?

Yes, my intention with this first album was to exercise and expand my artistic talent to see how far I could go into different multifaceted sound. I love the power of synth sounds, as I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and wanted to bring these emotional invoking sounds back for a new generation to enjoy and appreciate. Whenever I felt something, I wanted to translate and share, I would immediately bring myself to the keyboard, playing with the dials to create sounds to deliver my important message as emotional therapy for the soul.

Who was the producer on Freedom Fly and what did the collaboration between artist and producer look like in the studio?

I am my own producer. I produced all the tracks on this album. I, however, did work with a sound engineer after I was finished arranging and creating all the laid tracks.

He then came in as the last step and helped me mix the master the tracks for digital release.

Can you introduce our ever-inquisitive readers to some of the other talented musicians that lent their musical alchemy into making Freedom Fly a bonafide reality?

I created this entire album myself. I am however, influenced by many artists as I am in love with the art of Music. I change up who I listen to from month to month, however, some big influences include 21 Pilots, Our Lady Peace, Empire of the Sun, Veorra, Agnes Obel, Bille Eilish, and Lizzo. All these bands are amazing in their own respect and when they are playing in my headphones, I find myself the happiest.

In your humble opinion, what differentiates Freedom Fly from anything else on the 2023 music scene?

I feel my sound captures raw music, the way it used to be. I do not use a lot of filters or try to “overproduce” my voice trying to make it sound “perfect” with voice enhancing filters, etc. What you hear is my raw voice with a little reverb and echo added at times, that’s it! I wanted to release music that was modern for 2023, but had an original organic sound that I enjoyed in past decades. I think this type of technique of music production is making a come- back into POP Culture, which makes me very excited!

We absolutely adore the tune of Learn to Let Go off of the Freedom Fly album! Is there a special story behind this gem of a tune?

“Learn to Let Go” was written by me when having to make some significant and challenging decisions about revamping my life with what, who and where I felt was the best for me and served me living my best life. I had the debilitating habit of negotiating this throughout my life, and as I came into focus with clarity in my mind, after my full recovery from a high anxiety condition, I learned what is important, and that sometimes we must let go of things, people, places in order to give ourselves the best chance to grow into the best version of ourselves.

On the heels of the release of Freedom Fly, can fans look forward to seeing you on the performing/touring circuit?

I am still in my infancy as the brand “Vittoria Vespara” and as much I wish I could snap my fingers and have a full tour planned, these things do need time to manifest and

happen. I am still learning how to navigate this industry and of course funding is always an issue! There is so much equipment I still need to purchase to make shows

happen! However, I am taking steps in the right direction to make this all a reality. In the meantime, I try to get out to cafés in my area with my guitar and perform these

songs acoustically and unplugged. Each of these songs on this album was born through my guitar primarily, with an exception to 3 where the keyboard is where I felt the

most inspired. So, if you’re ever in Revelstoke, you can see me perform out and about.

Who inspires you musically?

21 Pilots, Our Lady Peace, Empire of the Sun, Veorra, Agnes Obel, Billie Eilish, and Lizzo. (refer to answer 5)

You hail from Revelstoke, Canada. How do those roots inform you as a person and as a musician?

I was born in Revelstoke, B.C. Canada. It’s a small ski town in the monashee and selkirks mountain ranges. CP Rail has their main line running thru it. I grew up listening to Locomotive Whistles blowing, feeling the vibrations of these large vehicles roll through multiple times a day. The tall, majestic mountains were our secret for many years, until Revelstoke Mountain Resort was born on December 21, 2007. It took a few years, but suddenly we were on the map. Every snowboarder and skier was attracted to our world class resort and mountain and had to experience our amazingly huge snowfalls for themselves. We have the highest vertical in North America! The quiet life of the town suddenly changed with tourists coming into it to enjoy this natural wonder. With this, I was now exposed to other cultures, and other cultural events. Being the Plaza Manager for many years welcoming bands into our town square in the summer months, I had the opportunity to see first-hand all the upcoming musicians with their different genres and it inspired me so much. I served this festival for 16 years creating a safe haven for new and upcoming musicians having a platform to express their music. As our audience grew with tourists, this festival has developed and exploded into the “Revy Outside- Live” Event it is today attracting thousands of visitors every year. I am still that small town girl who loves diversity of people, and it was so enlightening to be exposed to such a shift in everyday life in my hometown.

Early in life you dabbled a bit in the jazz genre of music. Have you ever given any thought to doing an old-school jazz album?

Jazz is something I have always appreciated with its soulful rhythms and unpredictability and its unique way of whisking you away into emotions and stories you were not

expecting. I respect that aspect about Jazz very much! I keep this inspiration flowing when I create new songs. Even though my genre is not jazz, I believe jazz’s essence

is very much weaved into my music in subtle ways and I am always trying to cultivate its intentions within my sound.

At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving Freedom Fly copious spins on their respective turn-tables?

I want my listeners to feel understood in their challenges in life. I want to validate people that the recent few years that we have experienced happened and we were

affected in all our different ways. However, I also want them to be encouraged to not let the negative effects of the last few years be permanent. We have all we need

inside ourselves to grow past it and be better, stronger, and happier than we ever thought possible. And I want to provoke positive emotions and inspire, and that if a

small town lady of 50 years old can create and release her first LP album, anyone can do anything!! Peace and love to all.
