NBC Bay Area News’ Stephanie Magallon spoke with Akeem Mair about his experiences with Southwest Airlines flight delays and cancellations

Christmas 2022 this year was especially notable. Wesley Mair, Chelsea Starr Carroll, and Akeem Mair were traveling to visit their mother, Queen Douglas, who was spending the holidays in San Jose with their grandmother Earlene Dye. They were unaware that Southwest Airlines’ aircraft were grounded due to the significant winter storm known as Elliot, a once-in-a-generation blizzard. The widespread “flight panic” was caused by flooding, snowfall, ice, strong winds, and below-freezing temperatures, among other factors. Even Southwest’s crew scheduling system required assistance to cope with the pressure of the airline’s personnel changes, forcing staff to manually match crew and aircraft, leading to long wait times for pilots and cabin crew.

From Wednesday, August 22, to Saturday, August 24, more than 12,000 flights were canceled across the country. We took the cheap flights on Christmas Eve, but his family waited for their luggage at the airport for five hours before canceling their flights. They had to reschedule their tickets for tomorrow to travel on Christmas. This time, Akeem and his family waited more than ten hours at the Hollywood Burbank Airport! Why? There have been many postponed or canceled flights to San Jose. Queen learned that Flight 3019 was departing for Oakland at 6:32 p.m. when she FaceTimed her son Akeem about it. Akeem and his family decided to leave San Jose as a result.

Around 7:20 p.m., Akeem, Wesley, Chelsea, and Earlene discovered they were the only aircraft arriving at Oakland. At Oakland International Airport, all evening flights were canceled. The scene was chaotic, with luggage from passengers strewn across the floor and around the conveyor belt. The Queen spent Christmas Eve with them and picked them up when it was time to return to Pasadena. Our tickets stated that we would depart on December 27.

In contrast to their expectations that flight delays and cancellations would significantly decrease, Southwest canceled about 150 flights at Mineta San Jose International Airport. There were 137 cancellations at Oakland International Airport and 38 at San Francisco International Airport; because of this, Akeem, Wesley, Chelsea, and Earlene were left behind and had to return their tickets.

Akeem, following in line, got ready to approach an airport administrative assistant. But NBC Bay Area News reporter Stephanie Magallon noticed his annoyance and offered help. When she inquired about his health, Akeem responded, “It’s been a very long day; I’ve been in the airport for about 10 hours. “I got my little sister calling every rental company in town to figure out how we can go from here back to Pasadena,” traveler Akeem Mair says. Sadly, other people shared this opinion, and all car rental agencies were out of cars. Even if they did, the wait list would typically be over 40 people long.

Oh my goodness, you’ll become well-known at the airport now! When he was eventually directed to the front desk, one of the Attendants yelled. She apologized for the inconvenience of canceling his and his family’s flights, and they both laughed. She claimed that some other passengers assaulted him angrily as if she had started this terrible incident. She thanked him for his patience and gave him four $200 Southwest gift cards as a surprise. Bob Jordan, the CEO of Southwest, made every effort to fix the problem. Additionally, they gave me $126 each for our airline tickets. I was appreciative of what they had managed to do.

When Akeem was done, Stephanie questioned whether he was satisfied with the payments. He also gave her a surprise gift of coupons along with the refunds. Traveler Akeem Mair told Stephanie Magallon, “That was a difficult situation, and now I get to see my mom on Thanksgiving for free and get my money back. The fundamental issue, however, still needed to be fixed even after he received his money back. Akeem and his family were informed that flights to Burbank or Los Angeles would only be available after December 30. Trips to Seattle from the north can now be reserved through January 2, 20023! Akeem and his family boarded the Amtrak 710 Train due to this problem.

From Diridon Station, Akeem, Wesley, Chelsea, and Earlene, boarded the 3910 Bus for Stockton to catch the train. A Quitter, Qua is a case—a jar. Bus 5410 was required to transport Akeem’s family from Bakersfield to Pasadena. At the Pasadena Bus stop in Los Robles, in front of the Hilton Hotel, his uncle Nick Dye Jr. was waiting for them in his white BMW 6 Series GT. In the car, everyone was laughing about their strangest Christmas ever. Without a doubt, since you never know what you’ll get, life is like a box of chocolates!
