How would you classify your music?

As Indiepop with a lot of influences. My Music is eclectic and I always try to tell a personal story.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Prince, Radiohead and my sister Hanneke (and a lot more!).

What do you want fans to take from your music?

It would be very nice when they would be inspired to be more critical towards themselves and their surroundings and be more creative and less mainstream.

This is also because of my background as a music therapist. I use music as an instrument in the treatment of my clients, mostly adolescents. Clients with a low self-esteem, with trauma or with development disorders. And I’m convinced of the healing and motivating power of music.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

When I lived in my hometown Groningen there were many places where you could play, so there were many bands, mostly rockbands. That’s one of the reasons every year there is this big event called ‘Eurosonic’ in Groningen where European bands present themselves and is broadcasted live on national tv and radio.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

That’s very hard to answer, because there are so many:  Radiohead was mind-blowing, Iggy Pop was energizing, Prince was a big party, David Bowie was great and I loved the set by Knower (with Louis Cole and Genevieve Artadi) 2 years ago on Eurosonic, so talented!   And there are the performances by Motorpsycho, a band from Norway, always inspiring, breathtaking and deafening…

Live playing means direct contact with the audience. There’s no hiding, it’s the ultimate ‘being in the moment’. It’s like a very personal meeting with direct and honest responses. When all goes well, like ones hope, there this vibe which makes you flow and makes your audience flow like in a trip.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

My latest Album is called ‘Escape’.  Most of the songs are about some form of escape; escaping from reality, from violence, threats, escaping into art, into love, into dreams. The essence of this concept album can be heard in the first song with the same name: Escape. It’s a simple and honest song.  But every song has it’s own value and it’s hard to pick one out.

After this album I released a separate single named ‘Wargames’.  As a reaction on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  So for now ‘Wargames’ is my favorite, mainly because of the message it conveys, but also because of its nice rocksound.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

Certainly!  In 2015 I recorded an album with my sister Hanneke called ‘Kapsonic’. Hanneke herself is a great songwriter and musician. During this proces I learned to be more critical, more accurate in my playing and learned that every song has to be treated with the allmost respect. So it took a bit longer to produce it, but we were very satisfied with the end result.

After this I felt I had learned enough and was confident enough to make my own album, with a more unique sound, which resulted in the Escape album and the separate single ‘Wargames’ after that.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

That’s an easy one;  the second song of the Escape album is called “When I sleep”. In this song I meet my heroes in my dreams. (Ivanhoe, Prince and Paul McCartney). Absolute favorite is Paul McCartney. “Kappen and Macca are top of the bill, They will never split and they never will”…. McCartney inspired me musically when wrote another song on this album: “Where ever you go”.

What’s next for you?

First let’s see what ‘Wargames’ will do.  It’s an exciting period of exploring possibilities in and outside of the Netherlands.  New songs are on their way, so for sure next Spring will bring a new album. This album will include Wargames.
