Evans Odiambo Kidero, a former Nairobi governor, and the Kenya Revenue Authority reached an out-of-court settlement in which Kidero received a waiver of the Sh427 million outstanding tax issue.

Kidero is now able to pay Sh19 million instead of the disputed 427 million shillings in tax, according to KRA.

The sum consists of Sh12 million in principal tax, Sh2.4 million in penalties, and Sh5 million in interest.

Kidero has been told to pay Sh427,269,795.00 million in taxes.

The conflict began in 2016 when Kidero received a Sh680 million tax bill that included penalties and interest after KRA audited his financial and business records for the earning period from January 2011 to December 2015.

At the tax appeals tribunal, he contested the taxes, claiming that Sh423 million of the funds were donated to political activities.

Nevertheless, when the tribunal found in Kidero's favour, the taxman appealed the ruling to the high court. 

The court concluded that Kidero lacked sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the money came from his campaign accounts and permitted the KRA to collect the questioned sum.
