On Sunday, May 4, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka broke with his party's tough position about the impending passage of the planned Finance Bill 2023.

Kalonzo supported President William Ruto's divisive initiative by speaking during a church service at AIC Kasina in Mlolongo, Machakos County. However, he pleaded for Kenya Kwanza officials to take into account opposing viewpoints.

He emphasised the significance of the Finance Bill by saying, "By Friday, June 30, Kenya has to have finances for the 2023–2024 fiscal year so that the government may carry out its duties.

However, he cautioned Kenya Kwanza leaders against bullying lawmakers who opposed the bill and urged its revision to better represent the wishes of the people.

We think the Finance Bill will have a significant influence on Kenyans, so it's OK for individuals to express opposing opinions.

People who go to court to get a ruling on the suggestions made in the Finance Bill shouldn't be labelled as "sell-outs," he said.

In particular, Kalonzo backed Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who on Friday, June 2, filed a lawsuit contesting the legitimacy of the Finance Bill, 2023.

"Omtatah is entitled to the opportunity to go through the courts to oppose higher taxation since the judgement concerning the Finance Bill ought to originate from Kenyans," the head of the Wiper Party defended the first-term lawmaker.

"I too find it hard to believe. I only have faith in Kenyans' good discernment on this subject," he said.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition, claimed that Azimio was vehemently opposed to the Finance Bill on Tuesday, May 30.

"We won't stand by while Kenyans are harassed to solve the financial crisis brought on by poor economic management, excessive expenditure, corruption, and biassed and inept hiring into key governmental jobs.

"We oppose this retrograde march. We completely oppose the Finance Bill," Raila's Azimio said in a statement.

In order to avoid the anger of Kenyans headed by the opposition, Raila Odinga gave Ruto until Monday, June 5, to abandon the bill.

"I've had enough. Raila informed his fans that he would blast the trumpet and tell them what to do.

However, Sylavnus Osoro, the majority whip in the National Assembly, emphasised on Sunday, June 4, that the August House will adopt the bill in spite of Azimio's objections.

He pledged that once the bill was presented to the floor of the house," we would pass it because "the government has nothing to lose."

"Kenyans expect development from the government, and that is only going to be accomplished if the bill is enacted," said Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in favour of Osoro.
