Former President Uhuru Kenyatta sent President William Ruto a subtly worded admonition on Saturday, May 27, over the failed bipartisan talks.

Uhuru said he advocated for negotiations to promote unity in Kenya in a speech titled "Deepening Democracy for Development and Integration" at the 2023 Presidential Inauguration Lecture hosted at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

He, therefore, cautioned the present administration against supporting the winner-takes-all mindset, claiming that doing so would cause disunity and degeneration.

Additionally, according to Uhuru, the state's development agenda approach would suffer if negotiations with the opposition faction, which is headed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, were neglected.

"I am still conscious of the fact that I have to keep trying to contribute to promoting peace in my own Kenya. I use my voice and platform to educate people, particularly those in positions of authority, that engaging in discourse with those who disagree with their win is not a sign of weakness or negation of their success but rather a crucial instrument for building a more equitable Kenya and establishing a course for future growth.

"A course that satisfies the requirements of everyone in contemporary culture And let me remind you that the winner-take-all mindset will only lead to conflict and a slowdown in the national development goal," said Uhuru.

He, therefore, counselled Bola Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, to make sure his government creates a successful and cohesive country.

Uhuru emphasised that he must lead a unified country regardless of whether they backed him during the voting period, even though Tinubu wasn't there at the event.

Uhuru emphasised the need to combat bad racial prejudice and corruption once again.

"I advise you to enclose yourself with views that will balance out the hardliners who believe they are entitled to some of your office space. Reaching out across political, ethnic, and religious divides would only benefit you," according to Uhuru.

His remarks followed the nonpartisan Azimio team's suspension of the negotiations after they claimed the Kenya Kwanza side had not complied with their requests.

Later, Azimio declined Kenya Kwanza's request to pick up the conversation on May 26.

Otiende Amollo, a Rarieda Member of Parliament, said the Azimio faction would only accept the invitation if Kenya Kwanza acceded to their demands.

According to Amollo, "Our letter was a notification, which does not require a response; the only response we would have is a communication by them indicating that they are willing to concede to our request on four temporary measures, which other things we do not need."

Azimio brought up some concerns, among them a pledge from Kenya Kwanza to cut living expenses, maintain election servers, and postpone the reconstruction of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Raila threatened to start a succession discussion on Friday, May 26, if Ruto didn't comply with their requests.

Kenya Kwanza's side did, however, pledge to work with Azimio once they called a meeting to discuss their issues.

"As the coalition's Kenya Kwanza side, we are always prepared for these meetings. The Kenya Kwanza side noted that the negotiations might get back up as soon as tomorrow (May 26), next week, or whenever we receive word from the opposing side that their representatives are prepared to continue.
