Michael Linley Fripp
Michael Fripp has created a broad range of innovations for the energy industry. He is a collaborative inventor of autonomous inflow control devices, dissolving hydraulic fracturing tools, acoustic wireless telemetry, and expanding metal alloys.
His innovations have become disruptive improvements in downhole oil and gas production and are enabling improved carbon sequestration. Michael is a licensed professional engineer, has authored numerous technical papers, and has coauthored four books.
Patent №:11753885 (September 12, 2023) – Autonomous tractor using counter flow-driven propulsion. This patent is about a wellbore tractor used in well systems. It has a base with turbines that rotate in response to fluid flow, which helps it move in one direction. It also has devices extending from the base that make contact with the wellbore’s surface, allowing it to move downward as the turbines rotate.
Patent №:11753886 (September 12, 2023) – Expandable metal packing stacks. Wellbore seals can use expandable metal components, replacing parts of a locking mandrel’s stack. They are protected as they pass through landing nipples. They create a seal by reacting with water-based fluids to form metal hydroxides. When no longer needed, the seal can be dissolved using pressure reversal or a mild acid.
Patent №:11753910 (September 12, 2023) – Variable flow resistance system for use with a subterranean well. This is a system for subterranean wells that can adjust fluid flow. It has a path for fluid, a sensor to measure fluid properties, and an actuator to control how fast the fluid flows based on what the sensor measures.
Patent №:11753912 (September 12, 2023) – Phase changing gas-lift valves for a wellbore. This wellbore gas-lift valve uses a housing and a flow restrictor. The restrictor’s position is controlled by altering downhole pressure, affecting the actuation fluid’s density. It’s installed on production tubing within the wellbore’s annulus and can adjust gas flow through the tubing by changing the restrictor’s position.

Patent №:11753307 (September 12, 2023) –Modified zeolites that include hafnium-containing organometallic moieties and methods for making such.
This involves altered zeolites and their production methods. These modified zeolites have a tiny framework with pores of 2 nm or less, primarily made of silicon and oxygen atoms. They also contain organometallic units attached to a secondary amine group with a nitrogen-hydrogen pair. These organometallic units feature hafnium and link the hafnium to both the secondary amine and silicon atoms in the framework.

The transistor includes a semiconductor base, a barrier layer on top of it, a polarization layer on the barrier layer, an insulating layer over the polarization layer, a gate electrode going through both the insulating and polarization layers, a spacer on the sides of the gate electrode, and a gate dielectric between the gate electrode and the barrier layer.

The fifth metal layer forms a global power distribution grid, and there’s a local power distribution grid too. Notably, the fifth metal layer is significantly thicker than the second metal layer.

This is about a mechanism that connects a moving cover to a body. It has an actuator for moving the cover and a manipulator attached to the cover. The manipulator has arms and joints that can move, and it also has a tool for picking up and releasing things. Sensors provide information, and a controller uses that data to move the cover and the tool to interact with objects.
