Belfast International Airport

Belfast International Airport (IATA Name: BFS), which is traceable to the Northwest part of Belfast in Northern Ireland, is the main airport in Northern Ireland. Previously, Belfast International Airport was called Aldergrove Airport, named after the neighboring village of Aldergrove. 

Northern Ireland’s largest airline, EasyJet is the main airline operating from Belfast International Airport. Among destinations that the airport serves include Spain, Cyprus, Iceland, Austria, Portugal, Poland, Croatia, Switzerland, Czech Republic, among others.

VINCI Airports is the current owner and operator of the airport.

History

The history of Belfast International Airport goes back to the year 1917 when the airport sire was chosen as a Royal Flying Corps training establishment around the time of the First World War. Following the war, the airport was used for RAF operations. 

The year 1922 marks the commencement of civil operations at the airport while the first scheduled passenger service from the airport dates back to the year 1933.

Thereafter, Aldergrove served as an RAF Station for the Coastal Command during the Second World War.

Later on, in October 1963, the airport started handling civil flights. Also, the date 28th October 1963 marks the unveiling of a new terminal and apron at the airport by Queen Elizabeth.

Then, in the year 1971, Northern Ireland Airports was constituted for the airport development, which led to upgrades of taxiways, runways, and parking facilities therein.

The airport was rebranded to Belfast International in the year 1983. And the airport was privatized in the year 1994, with TBI becoming its new owner.

Vinci Airports acquired the airport in April 2018.

Transportation

Belfast International Airport is reachable by road, bus, and taxi.

Car travelers should take the M2 motorway from Belfast to reach the airport.

As far as bus services at Belfast International Airport are concerned, Translink runs an express bus service to the airport from Belfast City Centre.

Antrim railway station is situated next to the airport, providing connections to Belfast, Derry, and Lisburn.

Belfast International Airport has a range of facilities for the comfort of passengers. The airport has an array of car parking options, shops, and restaurants.

Belfast International Airport has four car parks, out of which three are on-site and one is off-site. The short-stay, long-stay, and main car parks are situated onsite and near the terminal building. The offsite “Park and Fly” car park, which is a short-stay and long-stay car park, is situated next to the main entrance of the airport. There is courtesy bus service to and from the car parks to the airport terminal.

Moreover, the airport has the Causeway Lounge, where customers can avail food and drinks while waiting to board their flights.

For some retail therapy, you can walk into the Aelia Duty Free, Boots, JD Sports, Discover Belfast, Allster, WHSmith outlets. Additionally, you can stop over at Starbucks, the Lagan Bar, Northern Quarter, Caffe Ritazza, and Sip & Stone for refreshments.
