Despite their previous gold medal performance at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, the Vietnamese runners could not replicate their success at the Asian Games in China. Their finishing time of 3:31.61 was an improvement from their previous record of 3:32.36, but it was not enough to secure a medal.
The level of competition at the Asian Games is unparalleled, with countries like Sri Lanka and India fielding their best athletes for this event. On the other hand, regional powerhouses like Bahrain do not participate in lesser tournaments.
In a surprising turn of events, Bahrain emerged as the champion with a time of 3:27.65, followed by India and Sri Lanka.
Despite their disappointment, the Vietnamese runners gave their all in the race and fought fiercely to the end.
Decline in performance
Vietnam’s performance in athletics took a downturn at the 19th Asian Games. While they had previously earned two gold medals and three bronze medals at the 18th Asian Games, this year, they failed to secure any medals.
Singapore emerged as the top Southeast Asian team, clinching a gold medal and a silver medal. The Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia also had successful showings.
The decline in performance was evident not just in the medal tally, but also in individual performances. Athletes like Nguyen Thi Oanh and Luong Duc Phuoc recorded slower times compared to their previous achievements.
Overall, it was a disappointing outcome for Vietnam in the athletics events at the Asian Games.
