Hanoi Experiences 36% Increase in Tourist Visitation Jan-Aug

According to the Hanoi Department of Tourism, the number of domestic and international visitors to Hanoi witnessed a significant year-on-year increase of 36.2% during the first eight months of 2023, totaling 16.9 million.

The total tourism revenue has witnessed a significant increase, reaching VND61.6 trillion (US$2.56 billion), marking a remarkable growth of 63.1% compared to the previous year.

According to recent data, the average occupancy rate for accommodations across all categories experienced a significant increase of 28.5% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 61.4%.

According to recent data, Hanoi experienced a significant surge in tourism during the month of August, with approximately 2.2 million visitors. This represents a notable growth of 23.1% compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

In the current reporting period, Hanoi welcomed a significant influx of visitors, with international tourists totaling almost 383,000 individuals, marking a notable increase of 21.5% compared to the equivalent timeframe in 2022. Meanwhile, domestic arrivals also showed commendable growth, rising by 12.5% to approximately 1.8 million guests.

The Hanoi Tourism Department, under the guidance of Director Dang Huong Giang, will be hosting a series of curated events, immersive programs, and captivating festivals to stimulate tourism in our vibrant city. These initiatives aim to entice tourists from all around the world to experience the breathtaking beauty and rich cultural heritage that Hanoi has to offer.

The Tourism Gift Festival 2023, scheduled for October, will feature an engaging workshop on creating unique tourism gifts at the esteemed Cultural Arts Center. Additionally, the highly-anticipated Hanoi Tourism Gift Day will take place on Tran Nhan Tong pedestrian street from October 6 to 8. Amongst the wide array of activities planned, visitors will have the opportunity to learn the art of crafting bamboo dragonflies and crafting vibrant gifts. Furthermore, attendees can immerse themselves in the captivating world of coffee making and indulge in the beauty of artistic flower arrangement.

The department is currently organizing the Autumn Festival with the theme “Hanoi in Autumn – Come to Love.” This event will take place from September 29 to October 1 at Hoan Kiem Lake and surrounding areas in various districts and communes of the capital. Its purpose is to showcase the cultural and scenic beauty of Hanoi to visitors.

The upcoming events in Hanoi include a Hanoi Cuisine Introduction Space from September 29 to October 1, a Hanoi Tourism Ao Dai Festival in October, and a range of specialized activities featuring sports tourism products, entertainment, and eco-tourism in the city.

According to Giang, the department plans to create waterway tours that will connect various tourist destinations along the Red River. These tours will start from Chuong Duong Do Wharf located in Hoan Kiem District. Additionally, the department aims to establish a creative design center that will focus on handicraft villages and tourism. This center will help promote and develop these industries further. Furthermore, the department also plans to include tourist villages in Soc Son District as part of these waterway tours.

 Hanoi will develop more tourism products to attract visitors. 

The Department of Tourism of the city of Hanoi aims to enhance and expand tourism collaborations with provinces and cities located in the South, Central Highlands, and Central regions of Vietnam. By the end of 2023, these cooperative efforts will be reinforced to effectively attract visitors to the charming city of Hanoi.

The department conducted a survey on agritourism models in Danang City, as well as the central provinces of Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue in August. This survey aims to develop new tours that will be offered in Hanoi.

“We have a dedicated focus on developing tailored promotional strategies for every market and target audience,” stated Giang. He further emphasized, “We will design distinct promotion plans for each market segment, such as golf tourism, sports tourism, and resort tourism for the Northeast Asian market; cultural tourism, night tourism, and culinary tourism for North American and European travelers; and shopping tourism, festival tourism, and eco-tourism for domestic visitors.”

The tourism industry will place a high emphasis on implementing digital transformation strategies to effectively advertise destinations. This will include executing promotional campaigns on the city’s information portal and various social media platforms. Furthermore, the industry plans to showcase its offerings at major international travel fairs through promotional programs.

According to estimates, the city is projected to attract approximately 22 million visitors this year, indicating a remarkable growth rate of 17.6% compared to the previous year. Out of these visitors, it is expected that around 19 million will be domestic tourists, indicating a significant increase of 10.5% from the previous year. The anticipated tourism revenue for the year stands at VND77 trillion (equivalent to US$3.26 billion), demonstrating an impressive yearly growth rate of 28.2%.
