International Visitor Numbers in July Reach Post-Pandemic High

In July, Vietnam welcomed nearly 1.04 million foreign visitors, an increase of 6.5% from June and 194.6% compared to the same period last year, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam served nearly 6.6 million international visitors, a year-on-year increase of 592.8%, fulfilling 83% of the yearly target, according to the authority.

The tourism sector anticipates reaching its yearly target soon, as the second half of the year is usually the peak time for international visitors.

The Republic of Korea (RoK) was the largest source of tourists in the seven-month period with 1.9 million arrivals, accounting for one-third of the total international visitors to Vietnam. China followed with 738,000 visitors, and the US with 445,000.

Among the top ten markets, four are in Northeast Asia, including the RoK, China, Taiwan (China), and Japan. Another three were in Southeast Asia – Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia. Australia and India ranked ninth and tenth, respectively. In Europe, the UK, France, and Germany were the three biggest markets.

Many major markets of the Vietnamese tourism saw growth in July, such as Taiwan (31.3%), Japan (15%), China (14%), the US (7%), and the RoK (6%).

In July, the industry also welcomed 12.5 million domestic tourists and a total of 76.5 million in the seven months, with a total revenue of VND416.6 trillion ($17.58 billion).

Meanwhile, the number of tourists to Hanoi in the first seven months is expected to reach 14.7 million, an increase of 38.7% compared to the same period in 2022, according to the municipal Department of Tourism.

Of this figure, the number of international arrivals is forecasted to reach 2.43 million, an increase of 5.7 times year on year, while domestic tourists are estimated at 12.3 million, a rise of 20.6%.

Total revenue from tourism in the period is estimated at VND53.7 trillion VND, a year-on-year increase of 68.3%.

The World Tourism Organization forecasts that global tourist arrivals will recover to pre-Covid-19 levels by 2024 at the earliest./.
