Cannes 2023 Awards Two Vietnamese Directors

French director of Vietnamese origin Tran Anh Hung was awarded Best Director for La passion de Dodin Bouffant (The Pot-au-Feu), a love story between chef Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) and gourmet Dodin (Benoît Magimel).

At its premiere, the Film received a seven-minute round of applause, and was highly praised by critics. They complimented the film for its stunning visuals, its respectful treatment of food, and its unique narrative style.

The Da Nang-born director was honored with the Camera d’Or award for their film The Scent of Green Papaya at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.

This year, Director Pham Thien An was honoured in the Camera d’Or section for Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell. The feature is based on An’s earlier short film Stay Awake, Be Ready, which won the top prize of the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.

The film received a 5-minute round of applause when it was premiered at Cannes.

This year, the Palme d’Or – the top prize – was awarded to Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Triet, while The Zone of Interest, directed by Jonathan Glazer, won the Grand Prix.
