After you have prepared the repair materials, you need to first remove the residue from the damaged pipe stem.

Before undertaking any repairs on a broken pipe stem, it is crucial to thoroughly clean the pipe. Any residue inside the stem or shank can negatively affect the adhesion of the repair compounds.

Start by carefully running pipe cleaners through the inside of the stem. Use soft cleaners and gently twist them around the interior walls to scrape away any built-up gunk. You can also brush the outside of the stem with a pipe brush to remove surface dirt.

Next, completely clean the inside of the pipe with alcohol. Roll a soft cloth into a strip, soak it in medical alcohol, and insert it into the stem, twisting and moving it in and out to wipe down the walls. Replace the alcohol and cloth until the entire interior of the stem smells fresh and has no debris left inside.

You can also use larger cloth strips or pipe cleaners soaked in alcohol to wipe out the shank of the pipe in the same manner. Repeatedly insert and twist the cloth to dissolve and remove any oily residue from the shank walls.

Allow the pipe to completely air dry before attempting any stem repairs. Proper pre-cleaning greatly improves the adhesion of the repair compounds for more durable fixes.

However, many people will suffer from oxidization due to prolonged use. So how to fix the oxidized pipe stem?

Unlike the damaged pipe stems above, oxidized pipe stems will lose their luster and become dull over time.

Therefore we need to lightly wet sand the stem with fine grit sandpaper to remove the oxidation layer and reveal the fresh surface underneath. Start with a 600 grit and work up to 2000. Then, wipe it down with alcohol to clean away any residue.

Once fully dried, apply a thin coat of clear nail polish or acrylic resin to seal and protect the stem from more oxidation. Allow it to fully cure and harden. For an extra glossy shine, buff the stem gently with polishing compound.

You can also rub a small amount of olive oil or beeswax into the stem to replenish moisture and prevent future oxidation. Run a pipe cleaner soaked in whiskey through the stem to sanitize and absorb excess moisture.
