Serving as an “official spin-off” to Netflix’s Strong Girl Bong Soon, Strong Girl Nam Soon is a hilarious slice-of-life drama set in an alternate universe. Directed by Kim Jeong-sik and Lee Kyung-sik, this fantasy K-drama features Squid Game’s Lee Yoo-mi in the lead role. It is helmed by The Lady in Dignity’s Baek Mi-kyung and blends in the evergreen romance, humour and fantasy genres. Despite being a fantastical drama, this Strong Girl sequel has demonstrated that its appeal transcends the realm of fiction and stands as a pioneer in its genre.

The Seoul International Drama Awards nominated, Strong Girl Bong Soon premiered on JTBC from February 24 to April 25, 2017. It became one of the highest-rated K-dramas on cable television and hurled the screenplay writer Baek Mi-kyung to conjure a sequel. However, instead of the sequel, Mi-kyung helmed the script for a spin-off and decided to expand the Strong Girl universe. Due to internal issues regarding the scripting and later the pandemic, the series was delayed numerous times.

It finally premiered on October 7 and is currently streaming on JTBC and Netflix (in selected regions, of course). Despite boasting only a few chapters to its name, the thriller K-drama is immersed in critical acclamations and is currently the most-watched series on JTBC. While Strong Girl Nam Soon is in its initial stages, it has paved the way for questions regarding the sequel to flourish. However, the authorities have yet to comment on these speculations and questions.

Even if neither the directors, Jeong-sik and Kyung-sik, nor the writer, Mi-kyung have elaborated on their plans regarding the sequel, they possess high ambitions for the franchise. What is the Strong Girl Nam Soon Series About?

Mi-Kyung’s initial script was supposed to follow “a former war photographer named Rayna who discovers she is indestructible and potentially the strongest woman in the world.” Moreover, Rayna is “Ghosted by [her Special Operations fiancé] when she reveals her newfound power to him, Rayna is hired as a bodyguard by a billionaire named Oliver, who sees her true potential.” However, it wasn’t approved by CBS Television Studios initially. 

Baek then decided to change his trajectory and began manifesting another script centred around Bong-soon’s sixth cousin, Gang Nam-soon. After being disappeared in Mongolia as a mere teenager, Nam-soon has been kindling hopes to reunite with her family once again. To fulfil her dream, she begins dodging between Mongolia and Korea where she accidentally stumbles upon Hwang Geum-joo (Kim Jung-eun) and Gil Joong-gan (Kim Hae-sook). 

Oblivious to the fact that the former is her mother and Joong-gan is her grandmother, Nam-soon finds herself entangled in a drug lawsuit. All three generations are soon caught in the case which is being investigated by Detective Gang Hee-sik (Ong Seong-wu). While Nam-soon tugs at Hee-sik’s heartstrings, she also pulls the hamstrings to trouble and troublemakers. Equipped with the hereditary “superhuman” strength, Nam-soon then embarks on a mission to untangle herself from the conspiracy.
