The NUP Diaspora’s response to the connection between Kyagulanyi and the embattled US Senator Bob Menendez has garnered attention.

Dr. Daniel Kawuma, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Diaspora team, has expressed concerns regarding the relationship between NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, and embattled US Senator Bob Menendez, who is currently facing corruption-related charges.

Senator Menendez, who has close ties to Kyagulanyi, is currently under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes from three New Jersey businessmen. These allegations could potentially complicate the Democratic Party’s efforts to maintain their slim majority in the US Senate during the upcoming elections.

In response to the charges, Menendez has temporarily stepped down from his role as chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasizing the importance of due process in the legal proceedings.

According to the US Attorney’s office in Manhattan, Menendez is accused of accepting various forms of compensation, including cash, gold bars, mortgage payments, and a luxury vehicle, in exchange for leveraging his position and influence to benefit the government of Egypt and interfere with law enforcement investigations related to the businessmen.

This isn’t the first time Menendez has faced corruption charges, as he was previously accused of conspiracy bribery and honest service fraud. Menendez, a senator since 2006, is up for re-election in 2024.

Hudu Hussien, the Masaka City Resident City Commissioner, criticized Menendez’s association with Kyagulanyi, referring to him as one of Kyagulanyi’s financial supporters. Hussien raised concerns about the trustworthiness of individuals financially supported by external forces to advance Western political agendas. He also voiced concerns about Uganda being influenced by Western powers and suggested that Kyagulanyi could only achieve leadership in Uganda by aligning himself with the winning team and implementing reforms.

Dr. Kawuma, on the other hand, clarified that Menendez and other members of the US Congress speak out against Human Rights Violations in Uganda not solely for Kyagulanyi but for the oppressed Ugandan people. He emphasized that Menendez’s statements were made in his capacity as a senator and not as a promoter of Kyagulanyi.

Dr. Kawuma highlighted the importance of the US Congress overseeing appropriations to ensure that financial aid provided to Uganda is used appropriately and not to oppress its citizens. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where Menendez previously served as chair, plays a vital role in shaping US foreign policy and safeguarding national security, overseeing legislation related to international relations and foreign aid programs.

Dr. Kawuma criticized what he perceived as misleading headlines in the media, suggesting they reflect the compromised state of journalism in Uganda. He reiterated that Menendez’s actions were motivated by his responsibility to protect the rights of Ugandans and uphold US interests on the global stage.

In 2022, Menendez petitioned President Joe Biden to take meaningful actions against human rights abuses in Uganda, including torture and corruption. He called for sanctions on senior Ugandan officials involved in corruption or gross human rights violations, transparency regarding detention facilities, and accountability for past incidents.

Dr. Kawuma stressed the importance of distinguishing between Menendez’s role as a senator and his association with Kyagulanyi, emphasizing that Menendez’s actions were driven by his duty to protect the rights of Ugandans and advance US interests.
