A Ugandan Woman was caught smuggling in heroin worth over Rs 13 crore( Ugx5,969,560,767)concealed under a carton at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

Customs sleuths made the arrest on a tipoff about substance smuggling into the city from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The smuggler had arrived in India in the guise of a garment exporter and was booked for carrying 1.9kg of the contraband. Investigators are probing her Bengaluru connections.

Customs sources at KIA said the smuggling attempt unfolded on Friday evening as officials combed through passengers arriving on a direct flight from Addis Ababa. The 32-year-old Ugandan had a business visa and claimed to have come to India for garment export to Africa.

Customs sleuths spotted something unusual about the carton that she had checked in. An inspection revealed that it carried some vegetables and different types of wigs. But despite the removal of all the contents, the box remained heavy. A computer scan revealed there was something pasted to the bottom of the box. Investigators cut open the box to unearth rows of plastic pouches packed with a yellowish substance, which a lab test later revealed as top-quality heroin.

The woman smuggler is said to have boarded with the drugs from Ethiopia to hand it over to accomplices, possibly in Bengaluru. Investigators refrained from revealing more information citing the ongoing probe.

The woman was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, produced before a city magistrate on Saturday, and remanded in judicial custody. She has been sent to Central Jail, Parappana Agrahara.
