Tolley Shields has left her position as director of awards, EMEA at Netflix after five years in the role.

Shields, who was the first hire outside the US on the Netflix awards team in March 2018, had her last day on Friday, March 31.

There is understood to be no acrimony behind the exit; Netflix will be looking to fill the PR role moving forwards, while Shields will remain in the industry working on awards and film festivals.

Shields’ departure comes off the back of Netflix’s most successful international awards title, Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front. The German First World War epic received a leading 14 nominations at February’s Baftas, winning seven including best film, and nine Oscar nominations, winning four at last month’s ceremony including best international feature.

Other Netflix awards titles during Shields’ tenure included Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog, Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial Of The Chicago 7, George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Alfonso Cuaron’s ROMA.

Shields oversaw Bafta best film wins on three of those titles: All Quiet On The Western Front, The Power Of The Dog and ROMA. Netflix also landed consecutive outstanding British debut wins for His House and The Harder They Fall in 2021 and 2022.

As well as establishing Netflix’s awards strategy in EMEA, Latin America and Asia-Pacific, Shields also built Netflix partnerships with organisations including the BFI – Netflix titles opened or closed the BFI London Film Festival on four occasions across the last four editions – Bafta, Bifa, the NFTS, London Screen Academy, We Are Parable and The British Blacklist.

Shields’ team at Netflix included Jim Bradshaw, former head of film at Bafta; and former Organic account director Tiffany Kizito, both of whom remain in their roles.
