The distraction-cleansing continues

So, from several days ago: No more Youtube app + black-and-white filter ON, for my Phone.

From couple of days ago: No more audiobooks in the mornings.

Today: Minimize time on the Big Computer.

I have four devices:

  • iPad: used for writing and reading. (However, now, also sometimes used for Duolingo.)
  • Windows laptop: used strictly for some translation work that requires the use of specific software.
  • Mac (the big computer): used for all kinds of things.
  • Smartphone: used for all kinds of things.

This used-for-all-kinds-of-things-ness is the problem. It is where I get distracted endlessly by “interesting” things. The difference between the Mac and the phone is that, realistically, I cannot stop using the Mac completely. It does some actual work, like podcast recording/editing and certain translations that benefit from a bigger screen (for multiple windows). I can’t put the Mac in a closet, the way I technically could, with my phone.

So, the best I can do with the Mac is to restrict usage. Actually, this is why I started writing on my iPad—to not turn on the Mac the first thing in the morning. But now, somehow, it became the other way around: I turn on the first thing in the morning, telling myself that I will write on it, but instead, I get distracted. And the iPad remains forgotten.

I have decided to put a pillowcase over the Mac when I am done with it for the day; then, the next day, I will attempt to ignore it until I’ve worked a little bit on the iPad. Or maybe a set schedule would be better. Say, from 7pm-11am, no big computer unless recording or editing! Only the smol screens!

And, yes, a pillowcase. That is what I will be using. It’s very handy.
