Alone Together (2022) Film Review: Lacked Any Discernible Attribute

Written, directed and acted by Katie Holmes, “Alone Together” is the most recent pandemic romance drama inspired by the COVID-19 lockdown. Despite being one of the more intriguing uses of the lockdown situation as a storytelling tool, the movie is still a little too shallow to be recommended.

Holmes stars in this movie as an ageing food reviewer who can no longer sustain herself in this today’s media environment. While the city is locked down, she and her boyfriend John (played by Derek Luke) make travel arrangements for the weekend. But it turns out that John will be unable to make it because his parents require his presence at home. On the other hand, June is determined to make the trip to this secluded hideaway.

When June arrives at the Airbnb that her boyfriend had reserved, she is shocked to find that the spare key has been missing and the lights are on. Because her phone died, she is unable to contact John. The door is then unlocked by Jim Sturgess, portraying Charlie, who was already inside the property June and John had booked. After realising they’ve been double-booked, the two come to terms with their situation.

As a matter of fact, it’s all lined up for June and Charlie to spend some time together. Holmes’ delightful performance serves as a solid foundation for their effortless on-screen connection. As a result, sexual tension, self-discovery, and unending quarantining are commonplace throughout this period.

Let’s say you’re curious as to why June is engaging in sexual activity with a strange man. It could be that her partner has become distant, and she suspects he is cheating on her because he recently uploaded a photo of him with a beautiful coworker on social media. But that barely qualifies as sufficient justification for beginning a relationship with another person, right?

Therefore, the movie doesn’t gain anything from having selfish characters because none of them has any nuance or depth to their personalities. The audience is abruptly made to root against June and John’s interracial relationship, but the film hardly focuses on or discusses it.

It’s a dreary, meaningless affair between June and Charlie in Alone Together. Furthermore, the conversation between these two is poor and lacking in depth. In the future, Katie Holmes should probably direct her attention toward the focus on characters with more of a storyline.
