‘Solo Leveling:ARISE’ Review: Does The RPG Live Up to Standards?

Netmarble has developed ‘Solo Leveling:ARISE,’ a mobile action RPG available for iOS, Android and PC platforms. As a typical mobile title, it incorporates many familiar elements, including a cluttered user interface and gacha unit pulls, characteristic of the genre. Despite this, ‘Solo Leveling:ARISE’ pays homage to its source material and offers some surprisingly intricate tactical options, potentially delivering an enjoyable experience.

Based on the immensely popular Webtoon and anime, Solo Leveling: ARISE follows hunter Sung Jinwoo’s journey as he transitions from “the weakest hunter of all mankind” to a pivotal player in global politics and humanity’s defence against external threats. The game faithfully starts from the beginning of this captivating narrative, ensuring fans of the IP feel right at home.

One of the game’s most notable aspects is its targeted appeal to players familiar with the IP. While accessible to newcomers, the condensed story may lack the depth experienced through other mediums. However, the streamlined narrative ensures engaging progression, with Webtoon panels, voiceovers and occasional 3D cutscenes maintaining interest.

In terms of gameplay, ‘Solo Leveling:ARISE’ offers two distinct combat modes: one where Sung Jinwoo is the player-controlled character and another where players control a party of support characters. Sung Jinwoo’s levels allow for extensive customisation, while the party-based mode requires strategic swapping between characters akin to Genshin Impact.

While the combat systems offer depth, actual execution lacks complexity, primarily relying on button tapping and basic movement mechanics. Additionally, the game’s monetisation strategy is evident from the outset, although it strikes a balance between free-to-play offerings and paid content.

Despite its monetisation model, ‘Solo Leveling:ARISE’ remains enjoyable without the need for extensive spending. Its adaptation of excellent source material and engaging combat system make it a worthwhile experience for fans of the series, offering a solid endorsement of the gacha action RPG genre.
