Music That Contains AI Elements Are Eligible For Grammys

The Recording Academy has unveiled a number of changes to the Grammy Awards in an effort to better reflect the developing music industry. The standards governing the use of AI in popular music have been modified in light of the growing ubiquity of AI-assisted art. The inclusion of these changes attracted attention at first since the notion of AI collaboration was seen to be uncertain. Only “human creators” were allowed to submit nominations, according to the rules, and anything without Human authorship was disqualified from consideration in all categories.

However, in a recent interview with The Associated Press, Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy CEO clarified the changes in the rules. He mentioned that music created with AI elements is surely eligible for Grammys. However, they refuse to give a Grammy or a Grammy nomination to the AI portion.

He said as long as there is a meaningful human contribution, the project shall always be eligible for a nomination or even a win. The aim behind this decision is that they don’t want Artificial Intelligence to Replace Human Creativity. They want it to enhance human creativity.

“As long as the human is contributing in a more than de minimis amount, which to us means a meaningful way, they are and will always be considered for a nomination or a win,” Mr. Mason Jr continued. “We don’t want to see technology replace human creativity. We want to make sure technology is enhancing, embellishing, or additive to human creativity. So that’s why we took this particular stand in this award cycle.”

He went on to explain through an example that a track which features an AI modelling program, performing the lead vocal will be eligible for a nomination in songwriting category. However, it won’t be eligible in the performance category, because what is performing is not human creation.

The Recording Academy had been considering changes to their rules regarding AI due to the increasing popularity of songs created in conjunction with AI technology, such as David Guetta’s ‘Emin-AI-em,’ in which the well-known French DJ used AI software to mimic Eminem’s vocals.

It’s questionable whether tracks that use AI in their development will be eligible for award submissions as early as the next year. However, Mr. Mason Jr. stated that it is anticipated that many records and songs this year will contain AI due to the extensive use of the technology in the music industry.
