United Nigeria Airlines ERJ145 Runway Excursion: Latest Incident Raises Safety Concerns

United Nigeria Airlines ERJ145 Runway Excursion

United Nigeria Airlines, a privately owned Nigerian airline, has recently encountered another safety incident involving their Embraer ERJ145 aircraft. On May 31, 2023, flight 5N-BWW was conducting a domestic flight from Abakaliki to Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport. During landing on runway 18L, the ERJ145 experienced a runway excursion, causing it to veer off the designated runway. Although the aircraft landed safely, it was unable to continue moving to the apron. This incident has raised concerns about the airline’s safety protocols and has prompted an investigation into the factors contributing to the event.

The Runway Excursion

United Nigeria Airlines’ ERJ145, registered as 5N-BWW, had 50 passengers onboard when it made its landing in Lagos. Unfortunately, during the landing, the aircraft veered off the runway, resulting in a runway excursion. Video footage shared on social media captured the aftermath of the incident, revealing the ERJ145 with its nose collapsed on the ground. Despite the startling scene, all passengers safely disembarked without any reported injuries. Authorities swiftly closed the runway for approximately two hours to facilitate the aircraft’s removal and initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Background on the Aircraft:

RJ145 involved in the runway excursion is reported to be 21 years old, according to data from Planespotters.net. Before joining the United Nigeria Airlines fleet, it had served four different US airlines: ExpressJet Airlines, Continental Express, United Express, and AeroVision International. It is worth noting that this particular aircraft had previously encountered an engine flame-out incident during a flight between Abuja and Lagos in 2021. However, it successfully performed an emergency landing, utilizing a single engine to return safely to Abuja.

About United Nigeria Airlines

United Nigeria Airlines entered the aviation industry in 2020 as a privately owned Nigerian airline. After obtaining its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) in 2021, the airline commenced operations, starting with its inaugural service between Lagos Murtala Muhammed Airport and Enugu International Airport just 11 days after receiving the AOC. The airline’s headquarters are located in Enugu, with an additional office in Abuja. United Nigeria Airlines operates from its base at Enugu International Airport and initially began with a fleet of four aircraft, connecting nine cities across Nigeria, including Abuja, Asaba, Enugu, Owerri, Yenagoa, Anambra, Lagos, Osubi, and Port Harcourt.

Currently, United Nigeria Airlines maintains a fleet of four Embraer ERJ145 jets, averaging 21.1 years in age, as recorded by Planespotters.net. It is worth mentioning that the airline previously leased an Airbus A320 jet to support its operations.

The recent runway excursion involving United Nigeria Airlines’ ERJ145 highlights the importance of aviation safety and the need for thorough investigations into such incidents. While no injuries were reported during this event, it raises concerns regarding the airline’s safety protocols and maintenance practices. The authorities’ ongoing investigation will shed light on the factors contributing to this incident and will hopefully lead to improved safety measures within the airline. United Nigeria Airlines must prioritize passenger safety and ensure that its fleet and operations meet the highest standards of aviation safety.
