Community Leaders in Adamawa Criticize Neglect by NEDC

A community leader from Madagali’s Palam and Mildu of Adamawa, expressed grave concern over the North East Development Commission’s (NEDC) disregard for the state’s entire Northern Senatorial Zone.

As the first victims of Boko Haram’s onslaught, villages in Madagali, a local government area, were neglected by NEDC, according to Joseph Pius Wadzamda, a youth leader from the Palam ward.

According to Pius, Mohammed G. Alkali, the head of NEDC, is focused on a few key places where Boko Haram strikes do not have a significant impact.

He questioned why, despite the fact that the commission was created to manage and promote economic vibrancy in the region, many communities in Adamawa state, in his opinion, now view the NEDC as a mirage rather than an organization created to revitalize the region.

Anthony Aberakwa, a youth leader in the Mildu community, believes that Alkali lacks the necessary skills to lead the commission and that it would be better for him to be relied upon to perform his duties while bringing in a qualified individual who can be fair to all Boko Haram victims in the North East.

Anthony urged President Muhammadu Buhari to fire Alkali for treating numerous villages in Adamawa North selfishly.

The Kuzum’s bridge in Michika is the only project the commission has completed, he claimed, and in his opinion, the work is of poor quality and does not adhere to the references’ and specifications’ requirements.

He asserts that the poor quality of the construction is a result of the contractor’s lack of local roots and the fact that alkali handed contracts to individuals from other regions of the nation who were unaware of their struggles during the Beehive rebellion.

He claimed that hiring contractors who operate from home will result in quality work and inspire them to act morally.

“The President should relieve Alkali of his duties, I don’t think he can work in the interest of all people.

“Since the commission came to be, nothing of immense value was done in my local government of Madagali, the worst hit area by Boko Haram.

“And the only work done in Michika is the construction of Kuzum bridge, but I tell that bridge is of low quality, I can’t see a federal government standard in the work.

“The contractors are all from another part of the country, but I’m of the view that if the work will be given to our sons and daughters who are contracts, its job will be neatly done because their conscience will never leave them to do the right thing.

“We are capable and qualified contractors that can handle all forms of contract the NEDC want, it’s better to give them than giving it to those that do not know what we want through during the Boko Haram days of attacks.

Our reporter’s attempts to contact Alkali, the NEDC media representative, were unsuccessful because the numbers had not been chosen at the time of publication.
