Read Why NBC revoked licenses of Silverbird, Beat FM, 50 other

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has given an explanation for why it canceled the licenses of 50 additional broadcast stations nationwide, including African Independent Television (AIT), Silverbird Television, and 50 others.

Key Points
  • The reason for revoking the license was the result of the failure of the affected stations to renew their broadcast licenses, totaling N2.66 billion
  • The Commission claims that they were given a two-week waiver in May to do this
  • The broadcast regulating body declared that the debtor stations’ continued operation “is illegal and poses a threat to national security.”

The failure of the affected stations to renew their broadcast licenses, totaling N2.66 billion, theGazetteNGR learned was cited as the cause of the situation by NBC Director General Balarabe Shehu in a statement released on Friday.

The Commission claims that they were given a two-week waiver in May to do this, after which they ran the possibility of having their licenses revoked.

However, NBC claimed that some licensees had not paid their due obligations three months after the publication, in violation of the National Broadcasting Commission Act CAP N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, in particular Section 10(a) of the Third Schedule of the Act.

“Therefore, after due consideration, NBC hereby announces the revocation of the licenses of the stations and gives them 24 hours to shut down their operations. Our offices nationwide are hereby directed to collaborate with security agencies to ensure immediate compliance”.

The broadcast regulating body declared that the debtor stations’ continued operation “is illegal and poses a threat to national security.”

Other broadcast stations were urged to renew their licenses for the upcoming period within the next 30 days or face sanctions.

The NBC stated that the list of offenders provided on Friday is only the first batch, and a second batch will be made public soon.

“The Commission also calls on all IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and all other broadcast stations that are streaming online to register with the Commission to avoid disconnection.

“Broadcasters should note that having a DTT or FM license does not warrant a broadcaster to stream online; they are two different licences”.
