Matt is the son of David and Lynne Smith. Smith played youth football for Nottingham Forest, Northampton Town, and Leicester City while attending Northampton School for Boys. Due to spondylolysis brought on by a back injury, Matt quit football.

Leigh Killick, his cousin who taught drama at Northampton, registered Smith for school performances without his knowledge.
