L’Oréal Paris stop street harrasment

At the heart of this global movement is “Stand Up,” which brings its training to local communities through partnerships with expert local NGOs focused on gender-based violence. In India, L’Oréal Paris has joined forces with Red Dot, Action Aid, and Breakthrough to foster this movement. Stand Up’s mission is to raise awareness about street Harassment and provide training using the “Right To Be’s 5D’s” methodology—an expert-approved bystander intervention program pioneered by Right To Be. This program equips individuals with five tools to safely respond when they witness or experience street harassment. Across 42 countries, Stand Up has trained more than 2 million people, with 608,000 individuals in India alone benefitting from its training.

Remarkably, 97 percent of Stand Up trainees report feeling more empowered to intervene when witnessing street harassment compared to before their training. Over 90 percent of trainees believe they could take at least one action to combat street harassment if they were to witness it—a significant increase compared to the general population where this conviction is at 67 percent.

Pankaj Sharma, L’Oréal India’s Director – Consumer Products Division, highlighted, “L’Oréal Paris has always championed women’s empowerment, and the ‘Stand Up’ initiative reinforces the brand’s unwavering commitment to the cause. We firmly believe in the transformative power of collective action and are positive that together we can make our public spaces safer. I urge everyone to take the Stand Up training to equip themselves to safely intervene when they witness or experience street harassment.”

Launched in March 2020, L’Oréal Paris partnered with Right To Be, a renowned NGO specializing in combating all forms of harassment, to educate consumers on how to ‘Stand Up against street harassment.’ Since its inception, this initiative has led L’Oréal Paris’ mission to address the pervasive issue of street harassment safely, utilizing the 5Ds methodology. At the Gateway of India in Mumbai, L’Oréal Paris once again affirmed its steadfast commitment to this cause.

The event, hosted by Mandira Bedi, began with a welcome address by Ines Caldeira, Global Deputy General Manager of L’Oréal Paris. The program featured an opening act by the talented trio of Fatima Sana Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Shefali Shah, along with Sanjukta Sinha, who delivered a mesmerizing dance performance. The Gateway of India was transformed into a spectacle through projection mapping tools, displaying compelling statistics related to the cause—a visual journey from caution to confidence that the Stand Up initiative aims to achieve. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, L’Oréal Paris brand spokesperson, delivered an impactful speech on the cause of women’s empowerment.

The evening featured a thought-provoking panel discussion moderated by renowned journalist Faye D’Souza. The panel included actor and producer John Abraham, Prasoon Joshi, Supreet Singh, co-founder of Red Dot, and Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women. They discussed the significant issue of street harassment and its indiscriminate impact on individuals, regardless of their gender. The event concluded with captivating performances by Manasi Scott and the Question Mark Crew, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.

In this momentous event, L’Oréal Paris not only reaffirmed its commitment to fighting street harassment but also inspired a call to action for individuals to stand up against this pervasive issue and make public spaces safer for everyone.
